My first Surly beer and hopefully not the last....great beer. Pours a super dark brown with a small head. Aroma is really nice. Roasty, nutty, some malts and coffee. Flavor is just creamy and smooth as hell. Good coffee sweetness, nice malt. Damn this is good. MORE PLEASE!

Draft @ Brewery: Dark brown, nice head and lacing. Nose of sweet fruit and cocoa, plenty of chocolate and rich cream, nut bread and dough. The flavor is rich and creamy, lots of chewy malt and chocolate. Nice finish. Good.

Can shared by DuctTape. Dark brown bdoy with a creamy tan head and nice lacing. Sweet mildly malty aroma, light cocoa and vanilla, fruity undertones. (6+) Surprisingly fruity flavour, malty character with cocoa notes. (6+) Average palate. Interesting, not quite what I expected.

Can. Head is initially small, frothy/fizzy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is clear dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted bread, nuts, roasted grain, cocoa), lightly hoppy (grapefruit). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively/fizzy carbonation. Simply put, a solid brown ale. Easy-drinking thanks to a good flavor balance, and a nice enough aroma. While it doesn’t rock my socks (let’s face it...it’s difficult for brown ales to rock anyone’s socks unless the malt character is extraordinary), it doesn’t make any real mistakes either. For my tastes, it’s just a bit too sweet, slightly overcarbonated, and the aroma doesn’t really make an impression. Definitely above the curve though.

Can@chris_o. Blackcurrant and chocolate malts aroma. Dark brown, beige head, good lace. Sweet, roasted, coffee, black berries. Soft mouthfeel with a dry bit harsh finish.

Brown color, with a really nice rudy/umber color when held to the light. Tallish, somewhat creamy, aged canvas hued head. Good lace. Toasted malt, light chocolate, dark caramel, and herbal hops in the aroma. Smells like a brown ale, nothing to exciting for me. Thin toasted malt flavors in the start. Gets more bitter and starts to get tinny and thinner the deeper in I get into it. After having the CB yesterday, I can recall the base, and now can taste how much the coffee added. HInts of fruit in the middle. Finish is dry and bitter. Really quite boring without the coffee.

This brown ale pours a dark amber color from a 16oz can. Small sized white foamy head. Aroma is malty, nutty and sweet. A medium bodied brown ale. Malts are caramel and sweet. Hops are earthy and floral. Lots of malt, brown sugar and molasses in this one. Nice balance. Good carbonation. The finish is a touch sweet with some alcohol. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

UPDATED: MAY 31, 2007 Can (1 pint). Shared with LagerLoather, courtesy of Oakbluff. Nearly opaque clear mahogany with a decent lasting creamy/rocky mottled beige/tan head. Solid aroma of chocolate malt, well-roasted, the nutty sweetness well-balanced by solid herbal, slightly funky fresh hops - very good. The taste follows, dark almost burnt roast malt, chocolate and a hint of coffee beans, cereal grain softness and balancing hop bitterness (not much alcohol). Body is light but a little chewy, nicely astringent, perfect carbonation, and it has a nice lingering slightly lactic roast finish. Excellent.
