COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

Can with thanks to Dakzale. Pours the color of darkly stained cherry wood with a cola like head of a finger and aromas of earth and nuts. Flavor is very similar and very good. It is very nutty with a little bit of a woody edge to it. Mouthfeel is OK, but I think I would like it to be a bit thicker. As is, I would definitely take more of this, though.

16 oz can. Sea salt and orange zest aroma. Wispy. Moist and fresh. Oat dust and lemon juice. Restrained. Pours a touching florid mahogany, with blood red fringe and a soapy tan head, creamy. Nice lacing. On the tongue, a robust kick of malty sugars and roasted malt. Begins with a salty sea oat sweep and then slides into a coarse and grainy tooth of grain, orange peel, toasted almond and sweet honey. The oat brings in great character to this brown. Not overly hoppy, in my opinion, a nice balance with some floral and resin bitterness in the back end. A rather quaffable and delicious brew. Nicely constructed.

RBSG 07. On tap at Surly. Dark brown/amber, ruby hues. Small tan head. Drinks like a bit fuller english brown without a twang. Toasty, biscuity, fresh oats. Creamy on the palate with a little carbonation bite on the finish. Medium body. Solid brown ale. From notes.

16oz can via trade with robertsreality! - Thanks Rob - Pours dark brown with a big creamy tan head that stays well and laces the glass. Nice aroma of caramel, toasted malts, and some coffee. Flavor is robust with roasted malts, caramel, and coffee.. The oatmeal can really be detected in the palate which is full bodied and almost gritty but with a nice creamy background.. Slight bitterness at the finish with a lingering smokey finish.. Wow this is a pretty nice beer and if there were 6 packs of this in Ohio I’d be drinking lots of these cans.. Nice one..

Draft at GTMW. Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. Nice aroma of nuts, caramel and toffee. The flavor has a great taste of roasted malts, nuttiness, a bit of sugar, and some light berries. Nice clean nutty finish. Very well done brown ale.

Thanks GaltScat! This is a very nice, easy drinking brown ale that’s on par with some of the best I’ve tasted in it’s category. Can looks like an energy drink, so you can walk down the street or drive down the highway and nobody would commit to looking twice. Except maybe in Minnesota.

Canned. Flowers, pine, chocolate, lots of flavour packed into this. Sweet, but is well balanced - a nice beer.

Thanks to Flyer for bringing this beer from a recent visit to Minneapolis. I found this beer to be rather good, but I didn’t find it to be spectacular. It pours a dark brown with striking blood red hues as light dances through it. Bender has a somewhat scarce but pleasing light tan head composed of inconsistently sized bubbles. Aroma is a pleasing but understated caramel and toffee smell with some alcohol esters. Flavor is pleasingly sweet and roasty, but with a bit of a watery mouthfeel which seemed to get stickier as I drained my glass (and as it got a bit warmer). Quite good.
