COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Get Surly! Here’s what happens when substance meets smooth. This oatmeal brown ale defies traditional categories. Bender begins crisp and lightly hoppy, complemented by the velvety sleekness oats deliver. Belgian and British malts usher in cascades of cocoa, coffee, caramel, and hints of vanilla and cream. An easy-drinking ale with many layers of satisfaction.

Poured from the can into a snifter. Brown with a light head. Aroma of caramel, bread, light chocolate notes. Taste is medium sweetness with light hop bittering at the end and finishes with slight notes of vanilla. Quite nice.

Had the tea bagged version of this at ABR this fall. Certainly a tasty brew!

This is my definition of a good any day beer. Crisp and hoppy with a smooth texture and malty finish. Caramel and coffee aromas. On tap at Pizza Luce.

Can - Pours mahogany with a nice creamy tan head that’s gone pretty quickly. Lots of sweet malt in the nose, giving off caramel, vanilla, raisins, and just a touch of alcohol. Taste isn’t quite as good out of the can as I remember on tap. It’s sour and milky and finishes with some bitter chocolate, coffee, and hops. A little watery, but with enough body to still feel a little creamy. Not my favorite Surly brew, but still very solid.

Tall boy can. Pours a deep brown color with a tan head and some lacing. Aroma is faint, cereal, maybe a little grassy hops. A little thin on the palate with average carbonation. Flavor is a little bitter, nutty, crisp. The oats come though nicely.

Can from Tim (Hophead22). Aroma of malts, oats, with a subtle hint of sweetness. Dark brown pour with thick bubbly tan head. Roasted dark malts, light hops, cocoa, cream, oats. Smooth medium frothy carb. Very enjoyable.

Tall boy can from sherm1016...thanks! Pours a dark brown; moderate head with lacing as it dissipates. Some hoppy flavor mixed with the oats and malts....goes down easy....not a wonderful beer but it is a brown ale...is a smooth drinker tho....

The first brown ale I have really loved. Bender does what it says and delivers a flavor that covers all bases with amazingly smooth transition. Very happy with this year round offering from Surly, which is easily becoming my favorite brewer and I haven’t even cracked my 2010 darkness!
