4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 OSLO (1084) - Ames, Iowa, USA - SEP 19, 2007
[Can] Pours reddish brown with a huge light tan head. A lot going on in the aroma--malty, fruity, slightly hoppy, hard to place everything. Taste is very nice--light bitterness up front, followed by roasted malt, hints of chocolate. Ultra smooth with a very long finish...dangerously drinkable. I had been really disappointed with SurlyFest, but they hit a homerun with this one!

Poured a two finger head into my pint glass.
Color is a deep amber -- not quite opaque.
Smell: first thing I get is British hops. Next is roasted malt. nice.
Taste. Pretty typical for a good american brown. Oh wait... incredible mouthfeel.. must be the oatmeal. very silky smooth. I don’t want to swallow.
Drinkability. I had one and I’m wanting more. I guess that rates at least a 4 in my book.
A very nice brown ale. This is my first Surly and I’m impressed. I have more in my fridge to keep me waiting in anticipation.
Serving type: can

Dark brownish color with foamy tan head. Quite a unique flavor including roasted hops, malts, chocolate, coffee. Surprisingly balanced beer; full of flavor and slightly bitter. Excellent beer.

Pours dark brown with a finger high tan head. Descent lacing. Sweet malty raisin nose with hops. Sweet then coffee and chocolate followed by a nice semi dry hop finish. Not at all what I was expecting. You can taste the nuances of a traditional brown ale in there somwhere the complexities are truly amazing. So smooth!!

UPDATED: JAN 19, 2012 Tap. Poured dark brown with a dark creamy head. Aroma consisted of mainly dark hops, hints of coffee, caramel and a sweet cream smell. The flavor began surprisingly bitter, though by no means aggressive. The beer then transitions into a pleasant malty flavor, almost chocolate like.

An awesome, very British brown ale with loads of not-quite-sweet malt flavors that somehow tastes very much like sweeter caramels and chocolates. Oddly dry and medium-bodied for the rich flavor profile. Really good.

Can. Pour is a black-red with a tight frothy head and solid lacing. Aroma is malt coffee and coco. Taste is more malt with faint coffee and coco and burnt malt. Palate is chaulky and finishes dry. This is amazing! I have not had this one since Coffee Bender was released, and I am quite surprised with the similar flavors.

Ported from BA.
Appearance:
Brown, would be clear if you could see all the way through it. Amber around the edges. About a finger of just barely off-white head that dissipates after a bit.
Smell:
toasted malt and a bit of coffee. Slightly sweet and no bitterness. There are some oats there too, and caramel aromas.
Taste:
Again, toasted malt. a bit drier than the aroma, but still has some caramel taste and oats. No bitterness at all, very earth. Doesn’t taste boozy.
Mouthfeel:
Thick and full, a bit chewy, probably thanks to the oats. Coats your mouth and lingers in the most delicious way.
Drinkability:
Very high. This is my go-to Surly beverage. Easy to drink a few of these, and you don’t feel like you need a change of pace. Simply put, this one is fantastic.
