Picked up a four-pack at Heritage Liquors in Maplewood, Minnesota. Pours an opaque dark brown colored brew with a rocky beige head that really sticks to the glass edge, even in a plastic cup, with all the lacing expected. Donít even think of using a plastic cup, Glass It! Aroma of citrusy and floral hops, grapefruit, a hint of Bakerís chocolate, coffee and a hint of white pine. Taste is full bodied, soft carbonation with flavors of dark chocolate, cascade-ish/grapefruity hops, white pine and toasted dark malts. Finish is quite thick for a BIPA with a well balanced chocolate/sweet dark malt and grapefruit aftertaste with a sweet citrus and red grapefruit aftertaste. Unlike anything else Iíve tried from Surly. Malty, sweet citrusy hoppy, alcohol warmth, and oily finish. Couldnít ask for a more suitable and full-bodied beer to be released during this year of the Multi-Polar Vortexes.

Tap (at Warpigs); black pour with a beige head; aroma of tropical fruit, pine, and roasted malt with a hint of dark fruit; taste is more bitter than sweet with pine, tropical fruits and then malt with a hint of dark fruit; finish is dry and bitter; good black IPA

UPDATED: JUN 27, 2015 Black, delicious, smooth, balanced. Wow. Nice. An expensive beer thatís actually worth its high craft beer price, pricey and worth it. well done. I think I would give credit to 3floyds more, due to my impression with the rest of surly.

Poured from can. Dark brown/black appearance with beige head. Slightly bitter aroma of hops. Sweet pine nose with a dark chocolate, bitter malty finish. Not too boozy. Smooth palate.

Pours black with creamy head. Good retention. Aroma is heavy pine, hops, and creamy malt. Taste is malt, Citra hops and spicy pine. Nice mixture. Love the idea of brewers getting together and getting creative. Very good. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Canned. Poured deep brown with a sticky toasted beige head. The aroma picked up sweet roasty black malts, honey, and slightly oxidized fruity notes topped by a hit of pine and citrus.. seemed like the hops faded a bit. The flavor found roasty honey and black malts at the core with lightly bitter fruity notes and peppery spice around.. finished tart and a touch boozy. Medium-plus bodied with moderate carbonation.. this particular can was past itís prime.

On tap. Pours a solid black with a tan head and lacing. It has nice pineapple and citrus aroma along with a flavor of fruity hops and toasty malt and licorice over a heavy body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a beautiful black with tan foam. I have a bit of a cold, so I canít smell much. Nice butter hop punch that isnít overpowering and fades into a nice malty finish that isnít over powering. Definitely a great beer
