The Dan Journal #494. Tasted 1/12/12. 16oz Can. Pours pitch and opaque with a thick cream colored head. Aromas of fudge brownies and coffee. Medium to full bodied with a huge malt bill. Rich and roasted with both sweet and tart flavors mixed in with the solid coffee character. Sticky finish with dark chocolate and fudge notes. Nice and solid drinking.

Straightforward and content with its identity, this is all black Folgers morning coffee and toffee malt. Strong roasted flavors, some hops lingers, a bit thin on the backbone and very one-dimensional, but easy drinking in the morning.

This beer is our regular Bender beer with a cold-press coffee-brewing process. We steep 20 gallons at a time, so this beer will pop up at Tours, beer fests and special tappings. The coffee is roasted locally at Coffee & Tea Limited in Linden Hills.

16 oz can into a pint glass, from Hy-Vee Wine & Spirits in downtown Muscatine. Brown/black appearance with a lacy, light brown head. Aroma of strong coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts and light earthy notes. Similar flavor with a medium body. Pretty damn good.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20

From a can into a snifter. Large beige head with medium bubbles, mostly opaque dark brown body. Nice full coffee aroma, some mocha, smells exactly like coffee ground that have been left in a percolator overnight, hints of barley. Creamy medium body, soft carbonation, oily, medium sweetness, moderate to low bitterness on the finish. Some smoke on the finish with more coffee and hints of toffee. Different and enjoyable.

Can. Basically cold, carbonated coffee. So thin. Low boost. Waste of time. Wouldn’t drink again.

Can at home. Pours a dark brown, almost black. Nice thick white head. Aroma is coffee coffee coffee. Wow. Probably the most coffee aroma I’ve smelled in a beer. Nice! Taste is coffee, with a bit of cream, slight sweetness and a mild bitterness. Medium body, medium carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel. This is like a nice boozy glass of cold brew coffee. Mmm.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
16oz can poured into a coffee mug. The aroma is a mild and smooth coffee with some woody spices. It pours a rich, dark caramel color with an off-white, dense filmy head that has a moderate retention. The taste is a medium, balanced bittersweet. The texture is oily and creamy with a fuzzy carbonation and a medium body. Flavors of coffee, chocolate, earth, and nuts blend nicely on the palate with a finish that’s earthy, but smooth with a tinny quality and flavors of pecans. The aftertaste is light with a flavor profile of spice and tin, but mostly clean.
