3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 JoeinEscazú (1120) - San Jose, COSTA RICA - JAN 15, 2009
Big thanks to my bud Matt for sending. Flavorful beer that shows how Belgiany esters and big hops can get along well. However it may be a bit too heavy in the end to be very refreshing. Can pours clear orange-amber with quick-fading white head. Nose has notes of honey, clove, and oranges, the latter I think from both the yeast and hops. Has a juicy malt sweetness to balance a juicy hop bitterness, and they nearly form a harmonious whole. Nearly. Medium to full body, a bit sticky where I’d prefer it to be light, lively and dry. Some alcohol warmth in the finish. Still a really nice flavor, and I’m guessing this would be money on tap.

Pours a golden yellow color with a nice white head. Aromas of Spice, fruit and malt (maybe some hops peeking through as well) Flavor is of Fruits, malt, spice and hops. There is a nice pepper flavor that comes in on the back end. very interesting! Thanks Brewblackhole!

Pour: 16 oz can into a Duvel tulip. Bronzed goldenrod color with a lackluster white head. A little wet lacing.
Nose: Honey and diacetyl sweetness, pear, pepper, a tiny hint of stone fruit, and some grass.
Mouth: Very peachy flavor, but not the lush, dripping-with-fructose type of peachy. More like underripe, bruised, didn’t-ripen-on-the-vine peachy. Accents of black pepper and earth. Diacetyl is just barely apparent. Mouthfeel is pretty nice, although the carbonation is noticeably coarser than a real Belgian saison. Solid drinkability, but overall this beer is only decent.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Glouglouburp (4558) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 9, 2009
In short: A crisp and dry moderately wild Saison with a whole lot of dry grassy hops. Very good stuff.
How: I come in a 16oz can. I was sent by Oakbluff to glouglouburp who in return sends a bit thank-you to Scott. I was consumed fresh a week after glouglouburp received me.
The look: I have a clear light golden body topped by a small off-white head
In long: My nose mixes wild Saison character and dry grassy Saaz-ish hops. My taste is exactly what the aroma hints on. I give you wild yeast, crisp cookie malts, some lemon and apricot skin, strong dry bitterness. I even think that my dry grassy bitterness is disproportionate relative to my smooth Saison character. I am often overlooked. Maybe you don’t think I can be a serious Saison because I come in a can. So go ahead and buy yourself a bottle of Rogue Festivale if you think good Saisons can only come in bottles. Yes I know, I am a Cynicale.

UPDATED: JAN 12, 2009 Hazy dark yellow color with a medium white head. A mild dry bitterness that is not to overpowering defines this beer. Not my favorite style of beer but very tasty non the less. I got some fruity grapefruit undertones. It almost tastes like a watered down furious with a little added spice.

16 ounce can shared by cdumler with Alraomon and myself. Thanks! Pours a slightly hazy yellow color with a thin head. Aroma of candi sugar, caramel and spice. Taste is primarily bitter leafy hops with lots of fruity notes, particularly peach and pineapple. Full bodied.

A lot like Dernière Volonté by Dieu du Ciel. Sticky Styrian Golding, floral/herbal hops. Pepper/cardamom, apricot. Sweet grainy malt and a nice smooth fullness in the mouth, but with a firm clean bitterness. Hazy golden-orange with slightly disappointing head formation/retention, but it’s still pretty good. Very aromatic, very much like Dieu-du-Ciel. I might even prefer it.

Can from Tweety. Pours a hazy, pale yellow color with a bone white, well-retained head. Aroma is of a more classic Golden Strong than a Saison, though it shares elements of both. Pear, apple, banana, pepper, bready, earthy. I don’t get any hop notes out of this, though they could have faded, don’t know how old this is. Taste is very smooth, light bodied, a tad watery, dry. This is very easy drinking. Alcohol hidden well, this seems like a 4.5 percent beer. This would be a nice beer to session. It’s not really my favorite type of beer and I don’t think it’s a particularly good example of a saison but it’s still good.
