Oh great, a fizzy yellow beer in a can, that’s just what the craft beer world needs! CynicAle melds Old World ingredients in a new school style. French malted barley, English oats and Belgian yeast create honey and black pepper flavors. Lively Slovenian hops provide the floral, apricot and peach notes. Toss your doubts away, toss one back and enjoy!

On tap at Haand Festival -14. A lighlty hazy golden beer with a small, white head. The aroma is piney and grassy, lighlty yeast-spiced and peppery. The pale malts are almost undetectable. It’s full-bodied and dryish on the palate, with a nice carbonation level and bitterness. Peppery flavor with pine cones and grass. Bitter, fruity finish. Overall, a tasteful and quenching beer I could easily have a few of. And it’s not as sweet as many American saisons are, that’s good. 140523

On tap at the POPE. Aroma is bread yeast, some grain, and perfume. Pours golden with a medium head. Taste is floral with some sourdough bread roll yeast and a sugary body. Overall, a little sweet sticky for the style but certainly pleasant. Kind of forgettable.

Draught @ Haand Ølfestival 2014
Pours clear golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, yeast, citrus and hint of pepper. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long yeasty, pepper, citrus and slightly dry finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Can from a bottle shop in Copenhagen (most likely M&F). Fruity and slightly hoppy smell. Creamy mouthfeel, lightly hoppy with a light malt base. I would have never guessed saison for this one, thought it was a sligjtly old APA. Very drinkable though.

Surly’s CynicAle is as delicious as it is unconventional. The appearance is everything you’d expect from a farmhouse ale: heady, lively, golden. The smells of yeast and fruit are extremely enticing, too. The taste is what blew my mind. Surly really nailed this one. The flavors of stone fruit and yeast blend perfectly to create a lovely earthy/sweet balance. While I’m partial to saisons that boast a big (and slightly sour) yeast strain, CynicAle shows that tropical flavors can also be a welcome addition to this style.

Burk från Mikkeller and Friends.

Nice light session saison with light Belgian floral yeast and light hay, bubblegum. Average for style. Carbonation a little fizzy for style and kills the finish, which has some sweetness. Tap takeover at Churchkey.
