COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
From the blackest depths of the brewhouse comes Damien, Child of Darkness. Spawned from the usually discarded remnants of Darkness, Damien is a dry-hopped black ale. Flavors of roasted malt and dark brown sugar suffocated by aromas of tangerine and pine.

Pour on tap at All Pints North, dark black pour with tan head, aroma brought notes of dark fruit, molasses, chocolate, some slight pine notes with a hint of citrusy hop as well, some coffee comes through with a touch of anise. Taste was a mix of anise, dark chocolate, dark fruit into a slight pine, hints of caramel, touch of roasted malts, finishing slightly roasted.

Draft. Black with thin tan head. Light aroma of brown sugar, molasses, and roasted malts. Medium body, medium malt and brown sugar sweetness (for an IPA), some hop bitterness, and a dry finish. A little on the sweet side, but still good.

On tap at the Surly taproom. It pours black with a light tan head and nice lacing. Aromas of roasted malt, hops, chocolate, and hints of toffee. Flavor is medium bitter. Nice.

Not exactly what I expected given the tag line that it is from the remnants of Darkness. Not a bad black ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Enjoyed on tap at Jerry's Andersonville in Chicago, IL during a freezing rush hour snow storm waiting for dinner. Appearance is a murky dark brown/black with a thin off white head. Aroma is subtle, not much in a hop profile, someone mentioned the bar floor and I agree. Taste is pretty good, more malty than hoppy, light pine, chocolate and cocoa. It's good, I enjoy it, but Darkness still rules.

On tap at 2014 GTMW, pours a very murky dark brown with a light brown head, the aroma has quite a bit of hops and citrus with a good amount of roast and chocolate too, the flavor has a nice hop front end with a fruity and roasty finish too, love the fact this is only 5%, good stuff.

On tap at The Depot Tavern. Pours black with a grayish brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of dark grains and earthy roasted malts with a bit of earthy grass underlying. Flavor has bitter dark grains and roasted malts up front with a bit of grass and dark chocolate in the finish.

Mahogany brown in color... Aroma of smoked malts, peat, whiskey, anise, raisins, dates... Flavor is black licorice, candied prunes, raisins, anise, light smoke... Slightly sweet finish, dates, smoke... Enjoyable ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tap in a pint glass from Muddy Pig. Pitch black in color. Light on lacing but it sticks around. Aroma is mostly hops...not much of the coffee bitterness you find in other black IPAs. Taste has a smooth, chocolate feel. Mostly hops with a slightly sour finish. An easy to drink option. Solid effort from Surly.

Draft. Cloudy brown pour, with a light tan head. Roasted malt, light ash, dry cocoa powder, citrus, moderate hops, and slight pine. Ok, for a "Black IPA" I wish it had more hops.
