From the blackest depths of the brewhouse comes Damien, Child of Darkness. Spawned from the usually discarded remnants of Darkness, Damien is a dry-hopped black ale. Flavors of roasted malt and dark brown sugar suffocated by aromas of tangerine and pine.

Draft at the source. Black color, big beige head. Aroma of one and burnt espresso. Taste has huge roast, bitter coffee, bitter pine finish. Very tasty.

750ml bottle from Windsor Hy-Vee in a Sam Smith pint glass. Smells of milk chocolate, warm milk, plums, raisins, caramel, vanilla, soy sauce and wet earth. Pours the color of new motor oil with two fingers of pillowy head and a trace of carbonation on the sides of the glass. Rich lactic caramel and vanilla up front, followed by medium-roast coffee with a hint of ripe fruit mid-palate and a lingering cafe au lait finish. Astonishingly light- to medium bodied, creamy, slightly sweet and mouth-coating. A fascinating brew. It’s not Darkness to be sure, not even something I’d say that aspires to be Darkness, but rather something surprisingly light and balanced for a dark beer, with vague hints and traces of the deep rich sinfulness that Darkness is. I like it. I like it a lot. It’s certainly a lot cheaper and a lot easier to open than those wax-sealed Darkness bottles. Thanks again Surly!

This does not remind me of a black IPA, but is certainly respectable. Deep chocolate aroma. Medium full body with good hop flavor to counter the porter style malts. Finish is warm and bittersweet. Nice.

This was a great black ale. Not overly hopped like most black ales. This is very drinkable and enjoyable!

On tap, black with an off white head. Aroma of citrus hops with hints of pine, coffee, and dark malta. Taste was decent, nothing really stood out as being dominant in the flavor profile with a bitter hop finish. Good brew overall.

Cask (dry hopped with Glacier) - big creamy head, pitch black color, piney hop aroma and flavor with a good shot or roasted malt backbone, mild citrusy notes too - very good overall ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
