German All-Barley Steam Ale. A lesser known style of German ale once popular and brewed on the Germany/Czech border. Brewed with 100% malted barley yet fermented (warm) with a traditional Bavarian (wheat) Hefe-Weizen yeast, this is the German equivalent of a "Steam" beer. Gold in color and medium bodied with flavors of toasted bread, cloves, bananas and citrusy hop aroma.

8oz pour on tap at brewery. Minneapolis. Beer is much more transparent than expected. Aroma is nice, hefeweizen yeast, banana, floral hops. Pretty nice. Body is medium, a little lighter than j hoped. Not a lot of depth in flavor.

On tap. Pours a Hazy gold with white lacing. It has a nice banana, clove, and smoke aroma, with a flavor that is biscuit and malt with a slightly spicy finish over a light body. It's like a dunkelweizen disguised as a blond ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

8 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Consumed on 5-30-15. Pours a clear, highly effervescent, bright brass with a small amount of off-white to beige head. I wish there were more head. Otherwise, it looks good. Lovely, tart aroma features scents of banana, orange, lemon, banana bread, and caramel. Strong smell. Flavor is a bit stronger than the aroma. Smells more Belgian but tastes more German. Champagne flavor. Banana in the flavor but weaker than the banana effect is in the aroma. Tangy and mineral. Quite pleasant in taste. Light body. Lively, frothy, and refreshing in the palate. I was expecting this to be a subpar offering by Surly’s high standards based on the other ratings, but rather it is yet another big winner from this great brewery. I really like it a lot. It smashed my expectations, and it was perfect for the warm weather day in which I drank it outside.

Draft. Golden with medium white head. Aroma of banana, biscuit, and clove. Light body, banana, clove, some fruit notes, light malt backbone, and some moderate sweetness.

Keg @ Surly. Clear deep gold with a modest head. Strong estery nose. Banana and clove. Light nuttiness, some syrup. Taste is interesting. Dry grassiness. Some nectarine. Bread. Mineral. Clean. Very different than the nose suggests. Cool stuff.

Pour on tap at the brewery, dark orange pour with white head, aroma brought notes of bread, white fruit, some yeast into a bit of grain, slight earth, touch of esters, pepper, some white wine almost in there. Taste was a mix of white grape, pear into a bit of pepper, spice, some bready notes into a bit of earth, grass, finishing slightly bitter, slightly sweet.

[Tap] Tried a pint of this at a Surly tap takeover. Pours a lightly cloudy light yellow color with a soapy white head. Grainy sweetness in the nose. Wheat malts, mild clove and banana and mild floral hoppy flavors. Dry finish. Comes together pretty well overall.

Pint pour at Northbound Smokehouse. Smell is faint, maybe some sweetness. A pale, golden color with a quickly dissipating head. Taste is slightly funky with lots of grain prevalent. A weird, kind of expired fruit aftertaste that I don’t enjoy. Surly does a lot of good beers. This isn’t one of them.

Draft on tap at Bangers & Lace (Chicago, IL). Finally scored this one. Pours a decent hazy darker golden hue, deeper orange amber hues sit in the body with cakey whitish head atop. Stays as a firm filmy layer, sticks around and laces well. Aromas are gentle fruit and dry cereal grains, touches of yeast, dryness, and earth. More fruit and gentle estery elements showw some banana, bubblegum and pear. Initial is lighter end of the fold in body with nice gentle sweetness, apple, gentle spicy yeast. Subtle and soft, cereal with kicks of smoothed out gumball, fruit, and some gentle citrus. Middle is touches of bread, straw, cereal elements and just a kiss of biscuits. Backend shows a bit of florals, bitterness and dry earth. Some melon, florals, almost an Amarillo like fruit hop blend as we start to finish up. Crisper clean body, with just a bit of grainy and bready sweetness as we finish up. Solid stuff, a bit dry and cereal, a touch of soap and fruity hop. Nice stuff, even keeled. A touch sweet on the nose, a lingering biscuity and faint cinnamon waft gives it some character. The beer itself plays out well. Solid stuff.
