In honor of Surly Brewing’s fifth anniversary we brewed a 100% Brettanomyces fermented brown aged in used red wine barrels. Brettanomyces is a yeast used in place of "normal" brewing yeast, it produces a unique flavor profile. Pentagram is a single barrel "tasting" of Five. Five (with all barrels blended together) was released during spring 2011 in bottles and kegs. Surly Five has strong flavors of earthy black cherry and raisins with a sour finish.

Bottle from the cellar split with a couple crackas. Pours a clean deep maroonish brown, pushing black, thin mocha head. Aroma is cherry, molasses, brown sugar, horse dick. Moderately tart, cherry, chocolate, caramel. High carbonation. Not bad at all

Thanks to therealnomayo for bringing this one along on our Black Friday beer trip.

A - Pours dark brown with a small white head leaving light lace down the glass.

S - Smells of dark fruits; mostly raisins and figs; chocolate, sour cherries, balsamic vinegar, and some oak.

T - This one is pretty vinous up front quickly giving way to a mix of light funk, dark fruits, more balsamic, chocolate, damp earth and lots of oak tannins. The finish is pretty dry with a tiny bit of funk, lingering for some time.

M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Feel is funky up front giving way to a good dose of dryness in the finish.

O - For their first attempt it isn’t too bad. It had some good qualities but in reality it wasn’t mind blowing. I wouldn’t turn it down in the future.

Tasted on 2/8/14 from a 750mL bottle that I shared at the RBWG Grand Tasting. Pours opaque dark brown with a thick tan head that leaves average lace. The nose is dusty chocolate sour with tons of vinous, earthy funk. The flavor is quite sour up front, moving to some brown sugar malt with the same vinous funk from the nose. The body is medium, lightly tannic, with lively but smooth carbonation and a long sour vinous brown sugar finish.

Finally got to try this from a coworker. Strong sourness with a dark appearance for the style. Very good.

Bottle given to me by TODD! Thanks! A: Dark red bordering on purple. Thin, whispy head which dies away. Not much lacing. N: Cherry, vinegar, acetone, oak, and tobacco. Wine grape and earth. Lemon and grapefruit rind. T: Sour bordering on acetic. A lot of acid in here, but it’s rounded off. Some of the fruit and wine is getting through. M: Prickly, lighter body with some stickiness on the back of the throat. (aaarrgh.) O: A slightly less potent version of Supplication or Rodenbach Grand Cru. I remember hearing some terrible things about this beer. Whatever they were, the beer has settled down and has become quite enjoyable.
