4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 elgiacomo (565) - Chickamauga, Georgia, USA - JUL 17, 2011
16oz canned June 9, 2011. Served at around 45F. Big thanks to Ryan for this one!
Pours lightly hazy red/copper with a two finger off white head that leaves some impressive rings of lacing and recedes to a light cap. One of the darkest IPAs I’ve seen.
Aroma is heavy on the pine and grapefruit rind citrus notes, a bit dank, some caramel and bready malt but the hops take center stage. Very good strength.
Flavor starts with intense grapefruit citrus, a good dose of pine, some resinous hops, moderate bready malt backbone but doesn’t do much to deter the finishing wave of strong bitterness.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with very good carbonation.
Damn. Intense stuff! Grapefruit and pine bomb, very straightforward but they nailed it. A treat, for sure!

Tallboy can courtesy of the wonderful, wonderful internet. Pours a hazy dark copper with a medium-lived white head. Aroma is powerful piney hop resin with a fair bit of lemon and caramel. Flavors match, with a healthy backbone of the Scottish malt, which is actually pleasant, but with a finish that’s overly sharp and dry for my taste, but to be expected for 100 IBUs.

Can thanks to a very generous trader. Pours dark amber brown. Off white head. Nose of intense hops, caramel malt. pine, resin and grapefruit. Taste is strong grapefruit, hops, pine, resin and a full caramel malt body. Well balanced. Grapefruit rind bitter finish.

Big IPA with mounds of hops. A hops lovers dream especially if you like stanky, sticky herbal hops. I was impressed. The fact that it’s made exclusively in a can is even better. Wish there were 100 more beers like this one. My only criticism is that I wish the beer had some more malt backbone. Not enough to be imperial or anything, but this is hops and more hops. That’s it.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 nightrider (676) - encinitas, California, USA - JUL 6, 2011
Poured from a can thanks to Tyler in a recent trade. Nice rich amber color with a moderate off white head. Aromas of malt and a bit of grassy hops. Medium in body and smooth. Solid malt presence with a slight sweetness. Hops are present right up there and finish is pretty balanced leaning on the drier side. Pretty good beer.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 italarican (797) - Astoria, New York, USA - JUL 5, 2011
Can shared by jtclockwork (thanks!) as a leftover gimme from the RBSG grandtasting. Unfortunately, I discovered it had been crushed open during my bus ride home from RBSG, so I had to drink the half a can that was left that night. Pours a murky and hazy burnt orange. Rich aroma of caramel, perfume, passionfruit, orange peel, and pine. Flavor has plenty of hop punch and malty stickiness. Orange peel, pine, perfume, toffee, coconut. Slightly boozy. Hop punch dissipates more quickly than I’d like, but some nice malt stickiness remains. An excellent IPA.

Sampled from can with my good friend raveskdr.I normally don’t buy into the hype, but man the moment this one was poured, it was freaking awesome. Poured an orange color with a medium-small white head. Aroma was grapefruit, pine, hoppy hoppy hoppy. Bitter, pine. It was so wonderful. Alcohol is about perfect, at only 6.2%.
4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 hoosiers1994 (561) - Maryland, USA - JUN 29, 2011
Can poured into a pint glass. This beer pours amber with a light tan head that is long lasting and creamy. The beer has aromas of bitter citrus, like grapefruit. Taste is equally as great with notes of bitter hops leaving a very citrusy taste with well balanced pine flavor, and a finish that is clean and crisp. Palate is medium, creamy, and average carbonation. Overall, this is one fantastic brew that I wish I could regularly buy. Very flavorful without being too sweet, too bitter, or to heavy. Nicely done.
