COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like Hops? You’ll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it’s about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

On tap at the Bavarian Lodge in Lisle, IL a few months back. A: Slightly-hazy darkish orange with a good head and some lacing. S: Citrus and pine hops with a good sweet malt underbelly. T: Good caramel sweet malt underneath with some sweet fruits mixed in. On top of that are some clear citrus and pine hops. M: Medium body with good carbonation and not too much alcohol in the flavor. D: Exceptional. Probably the best American IPA that I have ever had. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 05-01-2009

UPDATED: JUN 3, 2011 Murky orange pour with a nice thick pillowy white head. Excellent juicy citrus and pine notes jumped from the glass, big time hop aroma. Citrusy hop flavors were well dispersed throughout this one, decent caramel malt back-end to balance it nicely. Mouthfeel was medium bodied, perfect carbonation, dry big bitter finish yet very smooth. Overall this was well done. The name fits the brew nicely, its a big hoppy bitter IPA. Damn good at that. First from Surly. Thanks to DalzAle for sending me another to re-try.

16 oz. can from Skyview. A hazy reddish-brown beer with a 1" head that looks good. The aroma is very nice. It’s piney and has a spiciness that comes off as cinnamon kind of like spicy cinnamon gum. If you like aromas from IPA’s then you’ll like this. The taste has a nice crisp hop bite. This is a good IPA. Again more piney flavors and has a spice to it that I guess comes from the hops but is very interesting. Now only if I can convince Surly to come to TX then I will stop emailing them about it 5 times a day.

Appearance: deep garnets, ambers, and rubies. Generous head leaves clumps of lace on sides of glass and a concaved head much like a donut, but better. Swirls with more lace and more puff.
Nose: fresh whole green hop cones abound with sticky hops resins. Hint of pine but overall green hops dominate. Pine needles and sense of dry pine forests in the back. No citrus except for some tangerine skin. Dry underneath with melba.
Palate: surprisingly light and smooth with a clean presence of flavors across my palate. Immediate presence of green hop cones which increase and grow with each quaff. Bitterness of resins and dried leaves in the back. Crunchy and toasty underneath with a hint of toffee bar sweetness. Palate slowly dries. Sticky lips with hop resins and toffee. Not a big body which really lets the flavors shine through. Sessionable and flavorful. Hop resins in my breath.
Final Thoughts: another grand hitter in the scheme of craft beer in cans, Surly can make my day any time. Seriously. Please. May I have another?

Fruity, piny, and hoppy aroma. Citrus, pine, and hop flavors envelop your mouth and finish with a piny hop bitterness. Well carbonated with a velvety resinous quality make this a very good beer for pairing with food.

Can. Pours Amber/slightly red with medium off white head. Aroma is plenty hoppy with big floral and citrus notes. Flavor is grapefruit hops with a nice malty finish to balance the beer. Definitely try this one if you’re a hop head!

On tap in Minneapolis. Comes a clear orange amber with a nice biege head. Aroma of floral and piney hops with some citrus and malt. Lots of hops in the taste, also citrus, caramel and malt. Very nice IPA.

Great staple brew from Surly. Aroma is really nice. The flavor is definitely unique. This is an easy to drink IPA, not as hoppy as most, but good good beer.
