COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like Hops? You’ll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it’s about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

From can. Pours a deep bronze hue, with a wet tan head. Has a bright hoppy aroma, with notes of pineapple and grapefruit. Pretty serious hop flavor, but also quite a lot of warm, bready malt. Lots of carbonation and very sharp on the tongue. Either this beer isn’t as bitter as I thought it would be, or my tongue has gone numb. Either is possible.

One of the better IPA’s I’ve had. Surly Furious hits you hard with the aroma of Pine Needles. It feels nice on the palate, with none of the harsh bitter aftertaste of lesser IPA’s. Freshly grated orange rind and soft pine needles on the palate. Great drinking on a cool Autumn Evening.

This beer is the premier example of a west coast ipa not from the west coast. Insanely drinkable with lots of flavor and character.

Can. Dark reddish amber with a creamy slightly off white head. An amazing combination of malt backbone and hops - very well balanced - nice citrus, light pine, some grapefruit. Nice bitter taste with a hint of sweetness, low carbonation but nice, becomes more bitter and dry with some malt, sweetness and booze coming through towards the end; finish is a complex combination of hops and malt that just keeps on giving, becoming more dry and more bitter (although not necessarily balanced). A great IPA, would love to be able to get this by the case!

I live in Chicago and I might very well drive to Minnesota just to stock up on Furious. This is hands-down my favorite beer of 2011.

Pint can courtesy of GT2. Pours a brilliantly clear amber with a half inch thick, creamy off-white head that leaves plenty of lacing. Aroma is sharp citrus, and floral hops. body is medium-full. Flavor is very bitter, but with a nice malt backbone that smooths it out allowing the citrusy hops to come through. Very drinkable, wish I had a few more of these!

Ported from BA. I’ve had Furious in just about every possible way, but this is based on my experiences having tank Furious at Darkness Day 2010. Appearance: Coppery and orange, a little bit hazier than from the can. Not much head to speak of, but kind of a thin white film sitting on top of the glass. Smell: Citrusy and very slightly sweet, and an earthiness from the hops. Highly aromatic and well-defined. However it’s served, you can recognize the smell of a Furious. Taste: The citrus strikes again, with an amazing burst of slightly sweet malt. Not as sweet as the smell, but it doesn’t need to be. The taste is extremely well balanced, as if this was surgically crafted. The hoppy finish is a beautiful end note. Mouthfeel: Fuller than from the can (which has more of a medium body), and nicely crisp. It leaves me feeling like I’ve just eaten an apricot. Drinkability: Extremely high. The taste leaves you wanting more, and if you’re in MN, there’s always more to be had.

Have had this many many times. One of my favorite IPAs. Deserves the credit it gets!
