From the can and there were only four of them and next time it will be 44. I was skeptical about a tall can of IPA. Iíll build a froth of the aromas and flavors and go beyond. I dunno. Itís good IPA.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draft at the brewery. This is a big, ruddy red beer. The aroma and flavors are big as well ... chewy, caramel malt, piled on with a solid, hoppy twist. Not sure itís a "100", but itís damn good. (#5652, 8/28/2014)

On tap @ Toronado Seattle. Pours bright orangish brown with thin lacy white head. Aroma is big caramel malt with light floral citrusy hops. Taste is roasty sweet caramel malt with balanced earthy citrusy hops. Quite malty for an IPA, but well balanced with plenty of hops to balance. Much less hop driven than a west coast IPA, but big and flavorful nonetheless. Super stoked to finally try a Surly beer.

Pours clear dark amber with a lace head. Light citrus hop aroma. Amazing citrus and pine hop pairing leafs into solid pine taste. Malt profile fits hops very well, woody caramel. Lower intensity malt and pine aftertaste. Slightly sticky mouthfeel. Very well composed beer, and an IPA with depth of character to match the hops.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured from a can bought in Chicago. Pours a brilliant reddish gold with a one finger, white head that dissipates slowly. Aroma is of American hops right up front. Notes of pine and grass dominate while strong citrus aromas are also present. Pineapple and orange zest come through. Very mild malt sweetness comes through as well. Flavor is strong bitterness up front with a touch of malt sweetness. Very grassy and piney and the bitterness sticks with me through the aftertaste. Hints of caramel and toast are subtle. Malt is bready and grainy. Bitterness is subdued significantly as it warms. Mouthfeel is clean and light to medium-bodied. Overall, this is a fantastic beer. A very hop-forward, clean, and fresh IPA. If youíre looking for a more malty, sweet IPA, this ainít it.

My first time drinking Surly. Furious is smooth, not tropical or citrus-like but more of a dank, earthy IPA I suppose. Really well balanced.
