COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like Hops? You’ll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it’s about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

Sample at the Sam Adams beer tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 07/30/09. The beer pours a hazy orange color with a medium thin light tan head that diminishes steadily. Stringy lacing. The aroma is mostly grapefruit with touches of pine and malt. Medium body with a lively mouthfeel and strong citrusy hops character. Notes of pine and sweet malt as well. The finish is hoppy with a lingering bitterness. Not as complex as some IIPAs but I can respect the straightforward hoppyness.

Thin offwhite head. Amber body with light carbonation. Intense oily mango aroma with catty hop notes. Dry-and-sweet roasty catty mango taste, somewhat chalky. Slightly oily mouthfeel. Dry chalky catty hop aftertaste. It’s good, but it’s a bit one-sided and thin. Still interesting. (0.47l can at Knut Albert’s.)

Sampled draught at the Autumn Brew Review in Minneapolis, October 7 2006. Dark amber-copper with a bit of lasting white head, not really much lacing....huge pungently hoppy aroma, quite fresh and leafy with touches of citrus....thick, rich, lightly sweet and again enormously hoppy on the tongue, lots of fresh rough hop oils, faint dry woody/twiggy touches, a bit syrupy towards the finish with lots of submerged dry herbs, moderately to strongly carbonated. Not blown away by this as some have been but there is certainly some distinction as in all of this brewery’s beers that I’ve tried.

Canned. Rather light body, but with a full assault of the hops. More a showcase for the hops, the maltiness underneath does not stand a chance in this duel!

Can from Eben. Thanks dude. This might just be one of my favorites... Amber color with great head, amazing lacing. Aroma is freaking amazing grapefruit and pine straight to the face. I almost can’t get over the aroma... Maybe I am fiending for more? Super bitter grapefruit and pine. Amazingly fruity too. A touch of toast. Creamy smooth mouth feel with a lingering resin coating in the mouth. One of the best IPA’s I have ever had! Check that; to me this might just be the best IPA I have ever enjoyed.

Poured a hazy copper color with a thin off-white head. Big fresh hop aroma with notes of grapefruit and pine. Caramel malt gives a backbone underneath. The flavor was hop forward. Hoppy grapefruit flesh and rind. Semi-dry finish. The bitterness at the end kept ramping up along the long finish.

UPDATED: NOV 6, 2007 16-oz can. Thanks, Theisti! Pours murky dark brown with golden brown highlights and a thick, sudsy off-white head. Intermittent little puffs of cumulus lacing down the sides. Big piney nose with hints of sharp grapefruit zest. Medium body, active carb, very refreshing attack with plenty of toast and pine/fruit. Nice clean-drinking mid-palate and then a big wash of piney creosote resin across the back. Nice stuff, kinda harsh, bracingly refreshing.

Can shared with and courtesy of HogTownHarry. I’m pretty excited about this one, thanks for sharing Harry! Pours a slightly cloudy amber-orange with an average size diminishing off-white head. Aroma: Oh fuck yeah, that smells so good! Lots of pine and citrus hops nicely backed by caramel malt, it’s pretty much as good as an IPA can smell. Flavour’s no slouch either, it follows the aroma with lots of pine and citrus hops and just enough malt backing it up, some fruit, a hint of spices and a long bitter finish. Medium bodied. Wow, there’s no question this is the best IPA in a can I’ve had yet and one of the best IPAs I’ve had period. More please!
