COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like Hops? You’ll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it’s about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

I got this can in a trade from Footbalm. I was scouring through the styro shipper, and was taken aback when it appeared Mr. Balm had sent me a can of coke. Little did I know, it was nothing short of Surly Furious! Madness.

This is a great IPA. I’m not really that into hops at all, but this is really sessionable, well balanced, extremely drinkable, and damn pretty in the glass to boot. Nothing unique in the taste or aroma, typical stuff, just very very well done.

Very hoppy nose, beautifully like chewing on flowers. Great appearance, thick clinging lace. Red/amber body. Ends a bit...normal...with some bitterness. Not bad at all! (on tap at Barley John’s)

Can via a trade with jrob_21 - thanks, Jonathan! Luscious, rich hoppy aroma, strong in caramel and a little less muddled than what normally falls into ’American Strong Ale’ on this site. Big on pine with a little woody citrus. Deep, dirty copper body with a twinge of amber and a huge, lacing, gorgeous rocky beige head. Taste is very dry and deeply bitter - but the kind of bready, redeeming bitterness that keeps me coming back for more, rather than the harsh, aggressive kind. Medium body and, again, full of bread/pine-soaked dryness and a certain earthy, rooty quality. Awesome.

From can, courtesy of dpjuart. Holy cat pee and grapefruit! Apricot, grass. Vibrant, with ozone. Mild amber clear with off-white to tan lacing head. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Bitter beer with tons of hops. Light sweet malt, but mostly lots of bitter. A bit harsh in the finish, but not too bad.

16oz can, courtesy of Schutzenliesel. Thanks, Tom! Pours a hazy, orange color; yellow-tinged head with good retention and patchy lacing. Enormous, grapefruit and citrus aroma. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: dry, citrus and grapefruit hop character; very chewy and resiny hoppiness; still, quite dry with tea-like malts. Dry, grapefruit and light malt finish.

Bonus beer shared by Melissa at the Sam Adams Beer Lover’s choice tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 7/30/09. Cloudy amber pour with a medium beige head. Citrusy and piney hop nose balanced by lots of bready malt. Citrusy and spicy hop flavor with a some malty sweetness before the bitter finish.

At GTMW 2006 on 8/12/2006. Had one listed as "Teabag Furious". A randalized or post-hopped version of the beer, I believe. Anyway, it pours to a coppery body with a creamy white head. The aroma is sweet fruity hops, juicy. Very nice. The flavor is sweet, juicy, hoppy. Nice sweet malts. The palate is refreshing, medium bodied. Very very drinkable.

UPDATED: AUG 16, 2011 20 oz. Imperial Pint draft at the Galway Tribes (Frankfort, IL). Poured a wonderous dark amber with a translucent body, nice tan head, and a very inviting appearance. Aromas were like a bouquet, very floral with some nice citrus notes and a touch of sweet malts. Initial taste was heaven. Very assertive floral hops that broke way to some citrus notes. A nice complimentary malt body that balances extremely well with intense hop character. Beautiful!
