COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like Hops? You’ll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it’s about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

16 oz. can shared with Lubiere (merci!), served almost cold in a goblet. MA26/07.

App.: Lazy orange-brown, flecks of yeast, small light tan head. Aroma: Tons of piney-citrusy hops (marmalade) ;some sweet malts behind that. Palate: Medium body and carbonation. Flav.: Lots of caramel and cotton candy esters; bitter orange marmalade; slightly off-dry, good bitterness with a great citrusy aftertaste.

Great stuff! I was furious that the can was empty so fast.

Damn...nice pine and citrus nose and a burnt orange body that bordered on blood red. Very small head and minimal lacing. Flavor, unfortunately, is all hops...completely one-dimensional bitterness with nothing to balance it out. Better as it warms...aggressive is an understatement with this one!!!

UPDATED: OCT 29, 2008 1 pint can courtesy of theisti, damn cool pint cans, I love the gimmick, thanks Tim. Poured into a wine glass with medium-light head. Its a darker IPA with a dark thick reddish amber color. Cannot see through it, some light translucence, some clarity. Aroma really in the DIPA territory - lots of hops and ample caramel maltiness. A citrus-y pine tree with ammonia type sweetness. Taste is too hop-water, which I often dislike. A bit thin on other flavors leading to an overly abrasive hop flavor that ends in a long too strong bitterness. Moderate carbonation. 7/4/6/3/15

Re-rate: Tea Bagged Furious version, sampled at Darkness day. This was very different than the first batch of the cans that I tried (maybe I should revisit the cans as well). Obviously, the aroma is much happier but without being aggressive either. The cool thing is that the flavor lost that caramel maltiness that made the beer too mucky and sweet. It was also very dry at the back end and much better attenuated. I liked this stuff a lot more. 7/4/7/3/16.

Can sampled with Mad_indian, thanks to Faro99 for sending this to me. Pours clear mahogany with a short tan head. Aroma of caramel malts, citrus, and piney hops. The flavor is citrus, spices, and heavy bitterness upfront, mellowing out, and finishing dry.

Can from Sean. My first Surly beer, and since I have another can from them, it wont be my last. Pours out a dark red color with a nice thick off white head on it. Smell is full of hops, pine, grapefruit.. Damn. It smells like a double IPA. Taste is very thick and chewy (that is for you, Seant), with no alcohol detected. This beer is so thick, I struggled to get the can down. Ridiculous how thick this beer was considering it isnt a double IPA. This isnt a bad thing though, as it is a very good beer. Thanks Professor Sean, I owe you a hot lunch.

Pours a very amber/chestnut brown color with golden orange hues and a two finger frothy yellowish beige head that lasts, leaving soapy chunks of lacing in it’s path. Earthy floral hop aroma with a bit of biscuit and caramel malt. There is also a good bit of citrus aroma with hints of lemon peel and grapefruit as well as some earthy dank pine. Nice chewy resinous medium body that is very refreshing and well balanced. Caramel and biscuit malt backbone provide a nice balance to the huge hop profile without overpowering it. Plenty of fresh, dank, resinous hop flavor with hints of citrus lemon and orange peel as well as some grapefruit and nice dry earthy pine notes. Again, this is an extremely well balanced beer that I have to stop myself from pounding. An excellent session beer that I wish I had greater access to.

A darker colored IPA, more of a dark brownnish/burgundy color with a full, wispy head. Extremely fragrant hop nose, it’s extremely piney and sappy, also a bit medicinal and foresty. Hints of lemon and lime as well come from the sensational aroma. Sweeter and maltier than most IPA’s, but with a lovely, fresh hop flavor. Awfully complex and well brewed. This is deserving of its high score.

16 oz. can from slob, thanks for this goodie! Pours hazy dark reddish copper, with a huge, fluffy beige head that leaves thick lace. Aroma features caramel, toast, floral and citrus, spice and ripe fruit. Rich malt backbone with toffee, citrus peel and pine needles, nice balance to the flavors, sweet orange juice in the finish. Smooth, medium to full body and easy carbonation. Wow, this is a great beer - especially from a can!
