3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 mgumby10 (1856) - Jupiter, Florida, USA - MAY 20, 2007
Courtesy hopscotch. Pours a dark caramel color with a light white head. Smells of big hoppy grapefruit and some nice malty characters, form the background. Taste is just monster hops, attacking me from all angles. Big grapefruit action, not much else to pull out of this beer, seems almost like a double IPA to me. I need to try more of this breweries beers.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 GAManiac (1852) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - APR 29, 2008
Pours a bright hazy amber color with a big, thick two-finger head that hangs around for quite a while. Lacing is excellent. Smell is dominated by big floral and citrus hops dominated by grapefruit and lemon zest. Balanced out with a nice underlying malty sweetness. As in the smell, huge citrus hops up front balanced out by a bready malt flavor. Sweet caramel taste gives way to a piney hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Creamy mouthfeel coats the mouth in hoppy goodness but still stings the tongue with bitterness. Medium body with solid carbonation. This is one of the better IPAs I’ve tasted and would make this a staple in my fridge if I had access to it. Big and hoppy but with a nice malty balance, this one is quite nice.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 holdenn (1841) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAY 3, 2007
UPDATED: MAY 15, 2009 Can shared at Hampton Inn Tastings DLD. Pours a red amber color with a small head. Nose of citrus hops and little else. Citrus fruit flavors, a little piney and tannic. Dries out in the finish. Decent beer. 7/4/7/4/15 = 3.7
Tea bagged version. Amber in color with a thin head. Great hoppy aromas. Grapefruit, pine, florals. Bitter citrus, florals, with light pale malts. Bitter and drinkable. Really tasty, but it appears my rating is the same. 8/3/7/4/15 = 3.7
4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 tjthresh (1840) - Greenfield, Indiana, USA - MAY 19, 2007
UPDATED: JUN 5, 2007 Can from theisti. Pours an orangey brown with a huge sticky cream colored head. Unbelievably thick and sticky lace. The aroma is caramelized fruit, pine, well buttered toast. Superbly balanced flavors of toasted malts and piney hops. Perfect mouthfeel. Just big enough to not be watery, yet thin enough to be easy to drink. Really a fantastic beer.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Brigadier (1837) - Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA - DEC 9, 2006
16 ounce can
This is probably the second best beer I have ever run across in can form. It competes in every way with Dale’s Pale Ale (except that you get 16 ounces per can instead of 12). I think I like this one a little better. I look forward to the day that Surly escapes the confines of the Twin Cities to reach Wisconsin and beyond. This should be the first thing they export.
Aroma / Appearance - An exploding head cascases out of the can into the glass. Initially there is only an inch of liquid and several inches of head but it settles over the course of a few minutes to the opposite. The body reminds me of rusty water. As I drank it, layers of lacing clung to the sides like layers of sediment tracing the buildup of a cliff. Hints of freshly mown grass, melon, grapefruit and wheat highlight a bright nose.
Flavor / Palate - Caramel and grapefruit precede a bitter explosion that washes across the tongue. When it fades traces of semisweet baker’s chocolate chips unfold into a nutty finish. The last traces of the glass tasted a little like coffee grounds which was a bit odd. On the whole, though, it was extremely enjoyable. I’m glad I have two more cans left. I will definitely be picking up more up this next time I go up to the Minneapolis area.
3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 wetherel (1837) - Encinitas, California, USA - SEP 23, 2007
Can tasted at Saarlander’s SoCal tasting with saarlander, cquiroga, dirty_martini & kittiesandbeer, JohnC and others. Full 1-2" head of varing bubble sizes, that fades at a medium rate. Fun and interesting raw hop aroma. A nice little source bitterness covers the tongue.

UPDATED: APR 29, 2009 I love Furious. Such great flavors of hops. Fruity and citrus with hints of pine. Nice and chewy, great body and is so smooth. Balanced and very drinkable.
