COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like Hops? You’ll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it’s about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

Arrived from the tap a clear, deep amber color with a tall and creamy off-white head. Aroma has a strong pine hops presence, modest amount of malt toasted notes and finishes with some mild lemon citrus and spicy hops notes without a hint of sweetness in it. Flavor has a nice maris otter type of toasted malt presence under a strong piney and leafy hoppy bitterness that really works well with strong malt character. Bitterness really has a strong staying power well after the beer has been downed. Beer has a moderate density for the body with a very crisp texture to it. Overall a fantastic brew. The dry hopped aroma matched the prevalent bitter bite found in the flavor perfectly. Really enjoyable brew!

Bottle, Chris_o shindig. Thin copper, no head. Slightly sour nose, astringency. Very fizzy mouthfeel. Very very hoppy. Harsh on palate, leaves slight sweet linger.

Wow, big thanks to grimreeser for an excellent in-person trade in Brussels. This was the first one I opened. Can poured an impressively dark reddish-orange with a thin whitish head. Nice fruity-hop nose on there, with grapefruit and passion fruit, with some pine backdrop. After the big hoppy nose the flavor was refreshingly subdued, only lightly sweet but fruity and moderately bitter... Pretty refreshing, good balance, with nothing sticking out too much. Just tasted good. Both flavorful and resfreshing, so it’s right up my alley.

Thanks for picking this up for me bro!! Pours a deep amber color with off-white head that fades quickly. Aroma is intensely fruity. I’m getting lots of citrus, mango, pineapple, grapefruit, pine, earthiness and a good nose of caramel malt. Taste is intense citrus hops, pine, and caramel malt. This one is a bit too astringent for me. The alcohol shows it’s face more then I’d like and the bitterness is a bit overwhelming. It seems that due to the overwhelming amount of hops they had a good portion of malt to balance it out. In the end, this one is a bit of a mess for me. It’s good, but in the end it has to come face to face with Two Hearted, which I think is the perfect IPA.

UPDATED: FEB 18, 2007 Rerate: Tested this beer against 9 others, and this came out tiied for the 2nd best. Bitter orange/grapefruit flavor. Very nice!

Want hops...try this beer. It’s very hoppy and very good. It’s bitter, it’s piney, it’s not well balanced, but that’s the idea. If you don’t like hops, you won’t probably like this beer. Fortunately for me, I like hops, and therefore like this beer. I would say though that the variety of hops used is not at the very top of my list. Not that that makes this a bad beer, but there are better IPA’s out there. I don’t know how this gets classified as an amber ale. In my book, it’s an IPA all the way. Original Rating = 3.8

12 oz can via skyview (thanks!). Pours a clear copper with a large beige head that leaves a LOT of spidery webbing as it slooowly recedes. Nose is very floral hoppy and piney. Taste starts very sweet caramel , then some orange, some fruity esters, and a pine wallop of a finish. Finish is bittersweet, but aftertaste is just dry mouthpuckering hoppiness as the sweetness is left to a distant memory. Body is perfect with a nice malt backbone that lets the hops take centerstage, carbonation just right. World class IPA!

Tap at Highway Mike’s: Pours a deep amber/copper color with a large beige head and light lacing. Aroma is medium sweet, very floral with citrus, grapefruit and caramel. Flavor is grapefruit, floral, orange, some caramel and a bit resiny. Very nice hop bite. Medium bodied, creamy texture. Finshes as hoppy as it starts, great American IPA.
