COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like Hops? You’ll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it’s about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

On tap at Jerry’s. Hazy caramel with big, foamy tan head / Nose of fresh hops and caramel / Light body with pronounced hops over decent malts, and good, sharp finish / Flavors of fresh cut pine, peaches, resin, and caramel / Excellent in a lighter style.

Incredible. Smooth and malty with an overwhelming hop aroma. Subtle bitter finish with notes of pine and citrus. Really well balanced, not at all overwhelming. Excellent brew.

UPDATED: SEP 19, 2007 Draft at Surly, can at home. Copper pour with light amber glints, beige/gray head, small but well retained. The aroma is hop centered, with grapefruit notes, pine resin, oranges and dried flowers, it’s really all over the board as far asd the hop profile goes. Plenty of malt in the nose too, fresh caramel and toasted grains lurking underneath the sweetness. The flavor is nicely balanced but not really that interesting. Medium sweetness is tapered well by agressive but never overpowering hops that lend a steady and moderately high level of bitterness throughout the flavor. The finish is long and sweet, bitter hops lingering and eventually changing sweet to extreme dryness, quite the velocity shift at the end. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, sticky, creamy and boasts aggressive carbonation that’s only noticeable upon first sip. This is very well balanced, a well executed recipe but it’s just too boring. I don’t need aggression here, but I need something memorable. Nothing stands out however, not even a feeling of satisfaction or ease of drinkability.

UPDATED: APR 3, 2009 Cask version at the 2008 Night of the Living Ales at Goose Island - Wrigleyville. Going by the moniker Tea-bagged Furious this was an impressive beer for my first Surly offering. Very hoppy, fully floral resinous and very fresh aroma and flavor. Creamy but not oily a very nice brew. Draught 04/02/2009. Reddish amber with a moderate creamy off-white head. Full creamy lacing down the side of the glass. Sweet floral and piney hops, very nice. Flavor is quite piney, particularly in the finish, sweet upfront. Full hoppy but with enough malt to provide a full body. Nice bitter lingering aftertaste. 7 4 8 4 Amazingly the exact same numerical rating both on my first try cask and the draught version. A really good IPA.

UPDATED: JAN 22, 2010 [Can] Pours amber with a good sized cream head. Leaves nice lacing on the glass. Aroma is strongly of citrus hops--pretty good. Taste is strongly of bitter grapefruit--definitely loaded with hops. FInish is quite long. Good mouthfeel. IPAs aren’t my favorite style, but this was well done and something I will drink again.

[On-tap at William’s Peanut Bar] Wow, absolutely outstanding. Just cut through everything I had drank that night and tasted so fresh. One of the better IPAs that I have had.

Can and draft. This is probably one of my best beers to have out in the cites when I can’t find anytihng else that I want. Pours a really nice orange amber color with a nice white head. Excellent aroma of both citrus rind and slight pine notes in the nose along with some sweet malt backbone. Medium mouthfeel and a bit chewy. Sweet malt flavors up fornt wuickly give way to vibrant hops taste. Citrus rind, grapefruit, and pine all in one. Really well balanced. Just an excellent flagship beer.

16 oz can thanks to maximum12 (from RB site). This pours a dark copper color with thin tan head. Strong smell of pine and grass. Taste was strong hops with a peachy taste. Mouthfeel was thick and very bitter. Definitely out of balance, if you like that. Could have used more sweet malt to offset the bitterness.

Thanks to RagallachMC for the can. Clear orange with a large head. Good retention. Fair lacing. Heavy aroma of fresh citrus and pine hops. Taste adds the caramel sweetness which was covered in the aroma. Also tastes some burnt malt. Ends with a big, bitter bite. All so very fresh. I really gotta hand it to the canned angle.
