COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like Hops? You’ll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it’s about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

From a can (of course). Deep amber pour with nice tan head. Floral and citrus hop aroma. Even some pine in there. Taste is hop (of course), but surprisingly balanced with caramel malt. citrus/pine on the flavor. Very bitter (in a good way). One of the best IPAs out there...

I moved to Minneapolis today, and this was first on my list of Twin Cities beers to try. I bought a 4-pack of cans, but when I got home I realized I didn’t have any glassware to pour the can into, so I’m drinking this out of a washed out iced coffee cup. Pours the color of my hair in the sunshine... sorry, pours a beautiful reddish brown ;) with a thick foamy head that dissolves slowly, leaving lots of lacing all over the plastic coffee cup. The aroma is like sticking your nose into a hop garden, mostly herbal, pine, etc. with just a hint of good potting soil. Despite the strong hop smell, the flavor isn’t too bitter. Mostly sweet, with a little kick in the back. Thick mouthfeel, with a refreshing menthol burst right at the end. This is a really enjoyable beer all around, and I’m so excited to now live where I can buy it just about anywhere.

I wish this beer was around when I used to live in Minneapolis. Amazing hop heavy beer with great fresh hopped up aroma and a hop infused carmel/toffee flavor. Great job Surly. I strongly recommend this one to any IPA lovers out there."

Canned 15SEP11 A: Rusty orange with a finger of tan foam which falls quickly to a partial sheet of the same. Excellent clarity. Spotty lace. (4) S: Resin, grapefruit, sage touches over a slightly sweet malt backbone accentuated with honey notes and the faintest copper fumes. Really nice nose here (4.5) T: Earthy hops up front, a hint of catty dissonance between the sweeter malts and resiny oils. Doesn’t taste as good as it smells, but it is a mighty fine beer. Getting some bubblegum later as it warms. (4) M: Prickly up front with the body to tame it. Really a great feeling beer with a good oily residue on the finish. (4.5) O: Really a great beer. It’s a month out, and some would call that "stale", but this beer is still lively and quite well constructed. I would imagine some more of the nuances from the hops would be better enumerated in a fresher can, but alas I am not in the distro for this beer. (4.5)

Pours a nice copper color with a red’ish hue to it. It smells of floral and pine hops with a little caramel note. LOVE IT! The taste is of big citrus and pine with a nice malty backbone. BITTER! A great beer!!

Acquired in a trade and very excited to try this. Poured into a Newcastle glass right out of the fridge. A - Poured a light tan head of about 1.5 fingers. The beer itself is a deep amber / wood color. S - Tons of pine from the amazing hops used in this beer. I get roasted notes and some salty bits as well. Lots of sweet going on here. T - Beyond the hops, I’m getting grape juice and apple juice. There’s some sweetness here as well. Also some spices but I can’t pinpoint. Maybe cinnamon? M - Lots of carbonation but the beer still retains the liquid properties even after heavy swishing. O - Delicious. I love canned beers and a canned IPA in pint size just makes my day. Excellent!

Ok, this beer rules. Pours deep copper colour with 2 fingers of eggshell white head that laced the entire way down. Aroma of hops, grapefruit, hops, mango rinds, hops, pine, and more hops. Taste of Mango and citron hops balanced by toasted caramel malts and toasted dark bread in the finish. Perfectly carbonated. I’ll go back to Minnesota for dozens. Everything you could want in an IPA.

UPDATED: SEP 19, 2011 Thanks to whoever brought this one to our IPA day party. A - Pours golden amber orange with a nice one finger tall white head leaving spotty lacing down the glass. S - Smells of tropical fruits; like grapefruit and mango; pungent citric hops, and some light sweetness, possibly from the caramel malt. T - Starts off with a big dose of bitter citric hops slowly giving way to a mix of tropical fruits; like mango, grapefruit, and orange peel; sweet caramel malt, and a touch of chewiness toward the very end. The finish is a mix of juicy fruit, hop bitterness, and a touch of dryness, lingering for a short period of time. M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Bitter-Sweet feel with a good bit of it lingering through the finish. A tiny bit too sweet but overall it has very good balance. O - Pretty damn good. When fresh, this one is really hard to beat. I still prefer Abrasive over this one but either one would be great in my book. I look forward to my next encounter with the awesomeness that is Furious.
