COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like Hops? You’ll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it’s about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

Pours a dark amber with tons of head and sticky lacing. Nose is resinous piney notes. First sip is hoppy but malt very present with some toasted flavor the yields to hops. Finish is clean. Best canned beer I ever had.

UPDATED: JUN 3, 2010 Can - I’ve only have four types of Surly so far, but each one of them is ridiculously drinkable without skimping on taste. Not sure how they do it, but I love it. Furious is no different, and is my favorite so far. It’s sexiness in a glass--all reddish-amber and naughty. Smells good too--floral and citrus hops, with perfume and caramel lingering. The flavor starts with hops, but flows into malty, bready flavors. There’s a bit of an oily hop taste on the finish that feels a bit off, but that’s nitpicking. It’s soft and creamy in the mouth--just delicious. I want to visit MN just to buy some more. UPDATE - Seriously, this is a ridiculous beer. Just a huge blast of citrus hops, tons of grapefruit in the mouth, and super refreshing. Up this one a couple notches.

Can brought back by my lovely wife while on a business trip. Pours a red hued amber with a one inch white head. Aroma is very hoppy, floral, grapefruit, and sweetness. Initial flavor is biscuit and sweetness then great hop flavor. Orange, grapefruit, just a wonderful IPA. It almost makes me wish I lived in Minnesota, or my wife would leave more often as I split my 4 pack with my dear friend beardface and drank my two already.

From can. Pours a deep bronze hue, with a wet tan head. Has a bright hoppy aroma, with notes of pineapple and grapefruit. Pretty serious hop flavor, but also quite a lot of warm, bready malt. Lots of carbonation and very sharp on the tongue. Either this beer isn’t as bitter as I thought it would be, or my tongue has gone numb. Either is possible.

Delicious.Looks like a nice dark pale ale with good sized head. Great hop forward aroma. Has a good bitter front, some nice malt in the body and an extremely crisp clean finish. Shame I can’t get it mroe often.

citric grapefruit on nosing, the hops are massive, but somehow the beer is balanced. very complex on palate with great resiny/piny finish. so much for the shitty beer in can thinking. awesome beer

Poured an amber red hue with moderate head that left lacing as it slowly faded. Smells like I opened a vacuum sealed bag of hops; mostly citrus with a bit of pine. As much as the malt is touted in the description, the star of the show is bitter citrusy hops (obviously). It is very light on the palate for the IBU.

I rolled my eyes initially when the guy at the liquor store suggested trying Surly; Minnesota? A great beer brewed in Minnesota (I live in Minnesota FYI)? Turns out there are several great beers that are brewed in Minnesota- Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery, Masala Mama IPA.
