COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like Hops? You’ll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, it’s about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

Pours a copper color with a frothy off-white head with very nice lacing. Has a citrusy, piney aroma and a sweet, spicy flavor with a creamy texture. Refreshing!

UPDATED: APR 3, 2009 Cask version at the 2008 Night of the Living Ales at Goose Island - Wrigleyville. Going by the moniker Tea-bagged Furious this was an impressive beer for my first Surly offering. Very hoppy, fully floral resinous and very fresh aroma and flavor. Creamy but not oily a very nice brew. Draught 04/02/2009. Reddish amber with a moderate creamy off-white head. Full creamy lacing down the side of the glass. Sweet floral and piney hops, very nice. Flavor is quite piney, particularly in the finish, sweet upfront. Full hoppy but with enough malt to provide a full body. Nice bitter lingering aftertaste. 7 4 8 4 Amazingly the exact same numerical rating both on my first try cask and the draught version. A really good IPA.

From the cask at Night of the Living Ales in Chicago under the name Tea-bagged Furious. Orange/cooper color. Aroma is strong with pine, grapefruit, and a bunch of citrus. Actually had some sweet malt in there to try to balance with the bitterness from the hops. Hops win, which is the way I like it. Very good beer.

Cool looking can from the grimreeser. Thanks Chad, I have been wanting to try this for awhile. Pours a deep amber with a thick beige head and spotty lacing. Aroma of caramel malts, ale esters, and mild fruity haps. Medium bodied with a nice English malty and well water texture. Carbonation is somewhere between soft and medium, and not prickly at all. Initial flavor of rich caramel and toffee malts, along with some very subtle tobacco and peat. There is an aggressive herbal hopiness mid palate, countered by some subtle citrus. Finish is earthy with dominate wet tea bag bitterness. I think what many people are missing about this beer is that it is more of an English IPA, with some interesting tweaks. Very solid example of the style

This is my favorite everyday beer. I drink it when I get home and watch the news. I drink it when I go to parties at beer-savvy friends’. Recently, this beer reminded me how important the nose is for flavor, and how important it is to drink beer from its proper glass. A friend brought some Furious to a job-site for me because he knew that it was a favorite of mine. There were no glasses, so I drank from the can. That was about the same as chewing a branch on the Christmas tree. yuck!! This beer (and any good beer or food) is nothing without being able to properly let the nose do its part in developing the flavor. Huge hop nose, Huge hop flavor that is snatched back from the brink by some serious malt depth. I’m constantly surprised by how many people get carried past the malt in this beer and end up complaining about the hops. Maybe it’s an acquired taste, this brinkmanship, but I do love it.

16 oz can from Stine. I was suprised this beer was so dark in color when I poured it- deep amber/brown in color with a medium off white head. Tons of citrus and some light floral hops in the aroma, with some molasses hanging around in the background. Taste- well this beer has a hefty malt backbone, but the taste is almost all citrus and floral hops, with notes of earth and wood- the malt does come through, and kind of muddles the hop character a bit. The bitterness is strong throughout and lingers nicely well after the finish. As much as I liked this, I probably would have liked it even more if they used some lighter malts. Thanks Eben!

16 oz can from hellomynameis; Nose of citrusy piney hops with a hint of caramel barely coming through the strong hop nose; copper colored with a medium straw colored head; flavor of hops, hops, and more hops lasting well into the finish. Great IPA!

16oz Can. Thanks to Stine for sending me this. Poured a deep amber body with huge head. Wonderful grapefruit aroma, hoppy beer. Flavor is sweet grapefruit, citrus hops with a nice bitterness bite to it. A nice sugary carbonation to it also. Smooth. Delicious beer. Wish I could get it in my area, I would stock up on it.
