Like Hops? Youíll like this fire-hued beer. This is the beer I have always dreamed of making. This is the beer that would come to mind while spending the last two years tearing down walls, hanging sheetrock, moving kegs, power washing the ceilings, arguing with various agencies, and cutting the water main. Without Golden Promise malt, made by family-owned Simpsons Malt, Furious would just be pissed offed. From Scotland, this malt is still produced in the tradition of turning over the barley by hand, resulting in a malt that is unsurpassed in its quality. Golden Promise is also used extensively by premium whisky distilleries such as The Macallan. This malt provides the backbone for the intense hop character. Four American hop varieties are used at a rate of over three pounds per barrel. The result is a rich malt sweetness infused with bright hop flavor and aroma from beginning to end. Oh yeah, itís about 6% alcohol and around 100 IBUs.

Can. Deep amber with a fluffy white head. Aroma is sweet fresh hops, like hops added to boiling wort. Iím not normally a fan of hop monster beers, but there is something differnt going on here. Has all of the good citrus and piney hop flavors and plenty of bitterness, but somehow seems tolerable at 100 IBUís. The hop flavor is so fresh and the malt somehow seems to balance the whole deal somehow. Not an everyday beer for my palate, but surprisingly enjoyable.

Cloudy amber orange with no visible carbonation and a thick, slightly orange head. Hint of citrus aroma. Tangy flavor; charred hops, bitterness. Light body, smooth palate, lingering drying finish. A little flat for my taste.

Can about 5 weeks old. Pours darker gold with a nice soft head and decent lace. Aroma is rich dank, spicy, and cedar hops on earthy moist grain. Flavor is bitter, spicy, soapy, and even a bit of something that reminds me of smoke but isnít, the sweetness is lost almost but is there. Feel is lively but potent, almost medicinal. This is an odd one. Itís not what I like in an IPA but itís got a lot of character.

Draft at the brewery. This is a big, ruddy red beer. The aroma and flavors are big as well ... chewy, caramel malt, piled on with a solid, hoppy twist. Not sure itís a "100", but itís damn good. (#5652, 8/28/2014)

On tap @ Toronado Seattle. Pours bright orangish brown with thin lacy white head. Aroma is big caramel malt with light floral citrusy hops. Taste is roasty sweet caramel malt with balanced earthy citrusy hops. Quite malty for an IPA, but well balanced with plenty of hops to balance. Much less hop driven than a west coast IPA, but big and flavorful nonetheless. Super stoked to finally try a Surly beer.
