Finally, a Surly beer my German mother will drink. She says this one tastes like a bier from back home. Not unlike a Zwickel Bier from Germany, Hell is our filtered and fermented with lager yeast, American hops takes a back seat to the Pils malt sweetness and fresh bread aroma. The color is well... hell (Deutsch for light). It’s fiendishly drinkable, and you don’t have to sell your soul to get another.

Pours a 2 finger clear straw color with moderate lacing. Rich, toasted malt and a touch of breadiness. Background of mild grassy hops. Mildly sweet with a hint of tartness tooo. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Medium finish that is primarily toasted malt. This is actually very good! Got this brew from STLDrew! Thanks man!

From notes. I had this one on draft at Buffalo Wild Wings in Milwaukee for a work trip. The pour is a nice foggy golden yellow with a big fluffy white head. It takes a long time for this one to fall down, leaving some great lacing up and down the glass. The aroma is pretty basic. There is a definite lager aroma to this. It’s got a strong metallic malt and a sweetness that’s a little off. There is a little bit of a grassiness that I think is probably the best quality. The flavor isn’t good. This one tastes old. There is a strong metallic maltiness and a lingering lagery earthiness to it. The grassiness fades a bit, and the sweet maltiness just takes over. The mouth feel is thicker and carries a strange carbonation. It’s voluminous, but not really crisp. The aftertaste is lingeringly sweet with a bitter maltiness that doesn’t really fit in. This one is interesting, but I’m not a fan.

Light golden color with a moderate, white head. Aromas of pale malt and floral to light herbal hops. Nothing over the top, but a solid lager to helles aroma. Light sweetness with pale malt dominating. Light acidic bitterness mid quaff. A return of sweetness in the finish and linger. Herbal to dries weeds in the long finish. A solid lager. 4/10

Above average american Helles. Bready, some skunky hops on the nose. Full bodied and short, sweetish finish. Would love to try this from the source.

Excellent lighter weight lager that has sublime malt-hop balance--bread and lemon on the aroma and both sweet and bitter taste and finish, with neither to excess. Poured from a can.

Tap at Radisson blu hotel, Minneapolis. Pours light yellow, clear. Sudsy head. Aroma is light citrus hops and lager. Flavor is hoppy lemon, lager. Nice for a lager. But still a lager. Nicely done, Surly.
