Finally, a Surly beer my German mother will drink. She says this one tastes like a bier from back home. Not unlike a Zwickel Bier from Germany, Hell is our filtered and fermented with lager yeast, American hops takes a back seat to the Pils malt sweetness and fresh bread aroma. The color is well... hell (Deutsch for light). Itís fiendishly drinkable, and you donít have to sell your soul to get another.

can-purchased at Woodmans in Racine, WI Pours slightly hazy golden hue with a small fizzy white head around the rim of the glass. nose is light grains, cereal, bread, very lite spicy hop accent. the malt profile here is a thing of beauty-love the bready and grainy notes here very much. Flavors exhibit the malt tones very nicely, slight and i mean very small metallic note (3 month old can) but still very nice. Long bready cracker husky finish. just wonderful stuff for this style. fantastic!

Golden appearance with a one-finger thick head. Crisp smell with notes of cloves. I also detected what can best be described as grapes in the smell. Almost like someone hid a little bit of white wine in a can of beer. The taste was surprisingly subtle for a Surly beer. Yes, itís a lager but Iíve been surprised by the attitude of pretty much every other Surly beer Iíve tried. Has a aftertaste of apple, and of malt - the later of which lingers for quite a while. I also picked up on quite a bit of sourness, which certainly did not work for me. Carbonation is heavy to begin with, but dissipates quickly. Generally speaking, I enjoyed the feel of this much more than the subtle taste. I probably wonít return to this, but if Iím ever at the Surly Taproom and have to recommend a beer to someone who considers anything darker than Grain Belt an abomination - then this is the one. Otherwise, there are much better lagers from Minnesota.

Hell yes. Wow, did I really have to do that? Of course I did. While this beer is certainly lighter-bodied and more simplistic than other Surly beers, that doesnít mean itís lower quality. Not at all. Hell has a beautiful bread-like lager yeast aroma with clean hops. Flavor has that too but with a clean feel and some refreshing crispness from the hops. This is the type of beer I would take (and drink) anywhere right from the can.

Darft/Fest. A- Bready, caramel, malty, slightly sweet, cereal. A- Yellow color, clear liquid, white head. T- Biscuits, caramel, malty, grains, slightly sweet. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, bready finish. O- A little unexciting. Just not really my type of beer. It managed to impart a little flavor on the palate but again, not much.

Appearance, body, and aroma arenít bad, but didnít care for flavor too much. The malt and hop combo clashed leaving me with off flavors. One time only for me.

16 ounce can. The 4-pack costed me $8.99 plus sales tax. I poured this one slowly so as to leave any yeast sediment in the can. Deep golden color with a white head. The carbonation looks to be quite high as I can see CO2 bubbles rising like crazy in the glass. The aroma is perfumy and reminiscent of raspberry. The taste confirms what I smelled, the flavor is dominated by hop oil. Very little malt sweetness in the aftertaste perhaps because the hop oil is overpowering. All in all, a decent American microlager, but not German in any way and very much unlike a Zwickelbier. I guess that for the bunch of hopheads who brew this, Surly Hell would seem rather tame. News flash, guys, German Helles is never dry hopped. This beer is proof to me that Surly should stick to its extreme ales as they do not know how to brew a German lager. Buy some Hacker-Pschorr Munich Gold and compare.

On tap. Pours a hazy gold with a white head and lots of lacing. It has a nice bread and malt aroma, with a clean taste that is biscuit and malt up front and a dry finish over a medium body. Drinkable and refreshing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
