COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Finally, a Surly beer my German mother will drink. She says this one tastes like a bier from back home. Not unlike a Zwickel Bier from Germany, Hell is our filtered and fermented with lager yeast, American hops takes a back seat to the Pils malt sweetness and fresh bread aroma. The color is well... hell (Deutsch for light). It’s fiendishly drinkable, and you don’t have to sell your soul to get another.

Pours: Light, clear golden yellow with a small white head that quickly disappears. Nose: Pilsner malt, biscuit, butter, slight hops, slight sweet caramel, and honey. Taste: Pilsner malt, biscuit, honey, and slight caramel with just a hint of hops. Mouthfeel: Oily, very drinkable, and actually slightly viscous for this style. Overall: Great beer for a style I usually don’t like. Thanks for including this in the trade 321Jeff!

Can from the bierkoning, canned on June 2nd 14. Slightly veiled gold pour with white head. Aroma is quite authentic, nice bready pilsner malt, light grassy hop, very light citrusy notes, really light and fresh, smells promising. Taste is hoppy, nice citrusy hoppiness, not IPA like but certainly on the american side of things, very easy drinking, light bready malt flavor, quite dry, very quenching. Palate is light bodied, medium carb. Well done.

Full flavor barely hoppy with notes of wheat grass. Cloudy yellow pour vert drinkable.

From the can, served in a Surly pint glass. Kind of a dull beer - not my favourite of Surly’s beers.

Can poured into shaker pint glass. Straw colored with plenty of carbonation. This is a pleasantly surprising beer that packs more of a punch than a lager style effort should. Malty backbone mutes the hops here, very biscuity with a bready feel. Refreshing and above and beyond most other options within the lager/pils field. Really solid.

Pours a hazy golden with a thinner eggshell head that settles to a ring and leaves some slight spotty lace. Nose involves fresh dough, some hay, some spice, some fruity notes, some savory lager yeast. Lightly sweet, fair bitterness. Lighter bodied, crisp, active, a bit oily, with a fairly lengthy doughy finish. Tasty brew, easy to drink, about pitch perfect for style.

Can. A nice helles. Pours a pale straw yellow with a medium head. Nose is faint with a little grass and a hint of malt. Mouth is light, medium hop bitterness. Very refreshing.

Location: Draft at Hackney’s Printers Row, 6/3/14

Aroma: The aroma has some grains and light hops, that are mostly herbal and grassy
Appearance: This one pours a clear golden color, with a small head, and light lace
Flavor: It has a clean malty and hoppy flavor to it, it is light sweet, and has a light bitterness
Palate: Smooth, clean, and easy drinking, medium bodied, with a clean, lasting, light dry finish
Overall Impression: This is a pretty nice example of the style. Maybe it isn’t the most amazing style, but the beer itself is pretty enjoyable. I could happily session this on a warm day in hell (or even a cold day for that matter).

16 ounce can (canned 1/3/14) poured into a Spiegelau tulip. Pours a clear straw yellow with almost two fingers of off-white head. Aromas of citrus, wheat, tropical fruit. Tasting notes of wheat, citrus, lemon peel, a bit of biscuit. Medium body with a dry finish. Medium carbonation, slightly juicy mouthfeel. Nice after a long and warm day.

Hazy straw color. Weak aroma. Some lemon and malt. Flavor is malty, biscuity, with a touch of lemon and earthy hops. Solid session ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
