2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 5/20 Igneous (1) - Minnesota, USA - MAR 1, 2011 does not count
I like most of Surly’s brews. This however is not a worthwhile ale and pales in comparison to the rest of their line-up. I would’ve scrapped the batch.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 mattyb83 (589) - Minnesota, USA - FEB 17, 2011
Tap. Deep, opaque brown in color. Large nutty aroma, some chocolate, and a bit of roast coffee in the aroma. Taste is mildly roasty and semi sweet. Slight cocoa, cream, and what seems like hazelnut appear. Creamy finish and highly drinkable. Please can this so!
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 CLevar (284) - Minnesota, USA - FEB 8, 2011
Firkin at a 5th ani party. Pours a clear dark brown, only large-ish bubbles for head. No lacing. Smell is some roasty malt, a bit of biscuit, some cocco and coffee. Quite nice. Flavor is much the same, with pronounced hop bitterness on the end. Dry finish. Mouthfeel is not great...firkin doesn’t really work with this one.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 kbutler1 (1078) - Minnesota, USA - FEB 1, 2011
Draft. Served at Cafe 28 on 1/31/11 by Todd Haug himself for the celebration of 5 years of business. Poured into a snifter a dark brown color with a nice 2 finger tan head, at first I thought I had been given Bender but the aroma soon made me realize I was given the correct beer. The aroma is more pungent than I would have expected with a light roast coffee and chocolate nose. Medium/Light mouthfeel. Very robust flavor with the roast and coffee notes, some mild bitterness as well. Very flavorful and enjoyable. I really wish this was one that they did all year round.
4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 20/20 fear025 (211) - Illinois, USA - AUG 14, 2010
On tap at the Bavarian Lodge, Lisle, IL.
Aroma:Nicely malty and dark.
Appearance:Brown in color, ok head.
Taste:Tons of dark malts, caramel, chocolate, coffee. This tastes hugely malty.
Palate:Medium body, good carbonation.
Overall:Fantastic tasting beer, refreshing and flavorful. As a homebrewer, I find this beer reminiscent of prefermented wort.
2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 rubbishystuff (1202) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JUL 10, 2010
This was not bad but it was really toasted. It almost smelled a bit like coffee grounds a little too much. Very dark color. Serving: Tap

The epitome of a session ale. Great flavor, decent amount of alcohol, aroma is toasty and keeps you coming back. But mostly this is about the flavor and the mild light body. On tap at Binny’s South Loop.
