COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed July 2006 with a blend of 7 different malts and candi sugar. This is our first in a series of anniversary beers. Look for something unique from Surly every new year. We let Todd brew whatever he wants for this series. Yikes! Only 10 barrels of this beer are available. Notes of licorice, vanilla, plum, raisins, and malt. 9% abv, 28 IBU, Color--tawny brown.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a clear amber with a light red hue and a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has sweet grains, dark fruits, Belgian yeast and a bit of toffee supporting. Flavor is sweet grain heavy supported by strong Belgian yeast, some raisin, a decent amount of date and a hint of toffee.

On tap at surly, pours a dark amber /brown with a large khaki head. Malt caramel aroma, with some dry bread and mild hops. Taste moly sweet bread caramel and toffee, with light fruity raisin. Ok, not a favorite style of mine, but we’ll done.

Re-brew on tap at the Surly Beer Hall. Deep amber pour with a copper hue and some white head and lacing. Nose is candy sugar wih some malt and a hint of spice. Really nice taste - no alcohol burn at all. Rich, toffee, malty but not overly sweet.

Great Taste 2009. This has aged marvelously well, and my first thought was that this was not a doppelbock, but perhaps an old ale. Lots of dark fruit and dried fruit on the aroma and on the palate. It finished incredibly smooth. Nicely done, and good to see it again after a few years hiatus.

Draft @ Brewery. Deep crimson pour with a tan head. Aroma of light lemon & citrus w/ bready caramel malt. Flavors had a good amount of caramel, bready malt, light yeast, candied fruit, with tinges of smoke. Medium/thick body, somewhat syrupy mouthfeel, sweet/malty/smoky with a malty/sweet finish.
