Itís been said; "Itís easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer." And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. "Surlyís a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers," and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day, itís just a beer. If you like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanboys grab it.

Can gifted by RussianDragon. Thanks Dave. The beer is light golden orange with a half inch of white head. Aromas of pine, melon, orange, cantaloupe, sweet citrus. Tangy and hop forward with some biscuit malt presence. Tasty.

Draft at the brewery! Similar golden color to the Bitter Brewer ... First impression: West Coast indeed! This is a fun drinker, with a definite bitter twist, California-in-Minnesota all the way. (#5651, 8/28/2014)

16 oz can purchased at Haskellís. Bottled 7.22.14, so relatively fresh. Pours an absolutely clear amber/orange color with a thick creamy off white head that fades to thick lacing and a spotty uneven head that covers the meniscus, drifting to the rim. Active carbonation; small bubbles are seen moving from the bottom of the glass to the surface. Aroma is dank resinous hop bitterness with slight citrus in the form of grapefruit. Flavor is big and bold juicy hop bitterness that is overall balanced with grapefruit citrus. Medium bodied, full active carbonation, bitter pine finish. Delicious.

Pours cloudy dark gold with a small white wisp. Aroma is big grapefruit and citra hops with earthy malt. Taste is a great balance with a great blast of grapefruit hop bitterness and superbly coupled with earthy and slightly caramel malts. Thanks to cards04 for this.

Bright golden, smells terrific, hops, fruit, citrus. Bright and bubbly feel to it, but still pretty full-bodied. Bitter and a little acidic. Great IPA!

A lightly copper tinted brass body when poured out of the can. The dense head is is a pale khaki. A bright citrus grapefruit nose is complemented with almonds and sweet marmalade. There is also an obvious caramel note. Flavors of grapefruit rinds and toasted almonds make for a fairly sweet beer. A nice toasted sweet bread taste is flavored throughout each drink with dominant citrus. This is pretty tasty.

Clear golden yellow in color... Aroma of rubber, earthy piney hops... Flavor is fairly dry and watery, not much sweetness, popcorn notes... Okay, kinda overrated ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

My first Surly beer. The aroma is quite piney and resiny. Pours golden orange with a nice medium white head and great lacing. The taste is a nice balance of dry malt and hoppy pine flavors. A great IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at CBC 2014. Hazy golden with white head. Aroma has grapefruit, wood, malt, caramel, tropical fruit and piney notes. Taste is fresh, pineapple, wood, pine, resin and tropical fruit with a sturdy malt backbone.

Pours a hazy straw color. Tons of floaters. Thin white head with some lacing. Aroma is a weak hoppy smell. A bit of a slick mouth feel. Mild hop flavor with a bit of musty flavor. Slight bitterness and hints of cardboard in the finish.
