It’s been said; "It’s easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer." And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. "Surly’s a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers," and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day, it’s just a beer. If you like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanboys grab it.

Poured from can with a large bone-colored head over a clear amber body. Excellent lacing. A surprisingly restrainted flavor follows a strong hoppy nose that has piney, herbal, weedy and grassy elements. The flavor is a bit metallic and dank. Feel: Medium body and carbonation.

Loving surly back in Chicago. Poured from a can at sheffields. Clear orange with sticky white head. Fresh fruit basket smell. Light on the hops and bitterness but makes up for it with the citrus floral yumminess. Good

UPDATED: FEB 6, 2014 I got a can of this from icehawk. Thank you! Pretty textbook here and another solid offering from Surly. Murky gold with a small white head. Nice and hoppy but not massively so and very drinkable. Light grass, semi-creamy malt body, with pine, lemon, and pineapple. Dry finish. Moderate bitterness. Good beer. Lighter going down than Furious, if I recall correctly.

Can thanks to Sgt. B (Brian), not on ratebeer. Sampled on January 23, 2014.
Hazy honey golden color, fluffy white head. Sweet, hoppy, citrus scent. Sweet, hoppy, citrus, bitter taste. Bitter, resin aftertaste. Medium to smooth mouthfeel, high bitterness.
Smells lovely, a bit to the high side of the bitterness in taste for me though.

Can, thanks Chase! Nice fresh citrus and pine aroma. Relatively full mouthfeel, drinks a bit like a DIPA. Nice flavors with a very slight bitterness in the finish.

Sample at the Ale Wine & Spirits beer tasting on 01/24/2014: Hazy orange-gold color with a medium bone white head that diminishes gradually. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Citrus, hops and malt in the nose. Medium-bodied with flavors of citrusy hops, toasted malt and pine. The finish is moderately bitter with a grassy hops and grapefruit aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

16oz can from Haskill’s. Pours a clear, light amber color with a white head and some lacing. Aroma is hoppy, pine, mango, a little garlic. Medium on the palate with creamy carbonation. Flavor is sweet, some bread, bitter hops, pine, pineapple, orange, grapefruit, with a dry bitter finish. A nice dry, hoppy IPA.
