Itís been said; "Itís easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer." And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. "Surlyís a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers," and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day, itís just a beer. If you like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanboys grab it.

Sample at the Ale Wine & Spirits beer tasting on 01/24/2014: Hazy orange-gold color with a medium bone white head that diminishes gradually. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Citrus, hops and malt in the nose. Medium-bodied with flavors of citrusy hops, toasted malt and pine. The finish is moderately bitter with a grassy hops and grapefruit aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

16oz can from Haskillís. Pours a clear, light amber color with a white head and some lacing. Aroma is hoppy, pine, mango, a little garlic. Medium on the palate with creamy carbonation. Flavor is sweet, some bread, bitter hops, pine, pineapple, orange, grapefruit, with a dry bitter finish. A nice dry, hoppy IPA.

Can and served in snifter: Pours a clean golden hue with a lasting frothy head and good lace. Nice juicy and dank notes on the nose along with some mineral and metallic undertones as well. Very dry almost tannic like finish sort of is off putting and knocks down the Palate score. Whiny, citric, and slightly hop spiced character. It is drinking good.

Can thanks to Leighton/Ryan. It pours a hazy light golden color with a medium white head. Aroma is floral and lemony, with hops and maltiness. Taste is nicely dry, with mild hoppiness. Citrusy and grassy. Medium body with good carbonation. Quite good

16oz cans from Binnyís. This pours a clear orange with a light white head and some lacing in the glass, the aroma has quite a bit of tropical fruits, some pineapple and grapefruit, nothing crazy but nice, the flavor has a nice smooth front end with some citrus and tropical fruit in the finish, pretty nice.

Snared can at CBC, Clerkenwell. Pours cloudy golden with a small white head. Aroma of marmelade, some fresh citrussy hops. Taste is crisp and fresh hops, grapefruit and oranges, under a nice rich malty body. Good one.

Rated from a pint can. It poured a clear golden/orange with abundant effervescence, a frothy off white head, and quite a bit of lacing. Hoppy citrus aroma (lemon & grapefruit). Biting hop taste with a bitter finish on the tongue. A solid, enjoyable, west cost style IPA. Has become part of my main rotation now that it is available in Chicago.

UPDATED: DEC 22, 2015 Really hoppy and smooth ipa. It is just the opposite of its name, it is under rated. Nice and citruscy and smells hoppy. Had this one at home. i have tried this again and brought the rating down, not as piney and dank as i like. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Can at the Gunnar tasting at Craft Clerkenwell. Slight haze orange amber colour with white head. Nose is very forward caramel, fruity, citrous, orange marmalade, grain musky alcohol. Taste is very hop bitter, pine, new sneakers, green hop acidic, caramel. Body is touch watery but big flavours. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Can from kbutler1 in a trade. Thanks Kevin! Pours an almost clear dark orange with a half finger of white head. Aroma of citrus and tropical fruits with a hint of pine. Taste is heavily bitter. Pine at first then loads of grapefruit. Hop-heavy but still very balanced. Medium bodied with a surprisingly creamy texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, great. Iíve had some good and some not so good from surly, but I would definitely put this in the winner column.
