It’s been said; "It’s easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer." And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. "Surly’s a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers," and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day, it’s just a beer. If you like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanboys grab it.

16 oz can from De Bierkoning. Clear golden to orange color. Uneven, off white head with good retention & lacing. Aroma’s: piney hops, some malty sweetness. Retronasal there’s some earthiness, but also bready malts, slightly roasted even. Flavor is rather bitter, slightly fruity. Mouthfeel is a bit thin (for the 7.3% ABV that it has). Finish is still bitter, a bit roasted, a bit herbal. Not the best IPA ever, but definitely decent.

Pours a bright, slightly hazy orange with a thin white pillow of head. Aroma is citrusy, almost like a marmalade. Some malt aroma comes out in the background. Flavor is drier than expected. Good cereal-y malt character in the foreground, giving way to citrusy, grassy hops with a dry and bitter finish that sticks to the palate.

Canned 5/22/13. Pours a hazy, pale yellow body with a white foam head. Aroma of grassy, soapy hops with light citrus and apricot. Flavor is mainly grassy hop bitterness with barely any malt. Slightly syrupy and sticky with a long, bitter, dry finish. Highly drinkable, but rather one-dimensional.

500mL bottle, sent from mista (thanks a lot, Geoff), pours a cloudy golden with a medium off-white head. Nose brings out notes of piney hops and some crackery malt - not the most aromatic. Flavour is pretty standard for an IPA, with notes of piney and grassy hops, backed by some crisp crackery malt. Very dry and quite bitter, even for an IPA. Highly drinkable and well-made, though a bit generic and unambitious.
