3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Very tasty beer - probably Surly’s best sour offering yet. Deep reddish pour with a quickly fading off-white head. Aroma is about what you would expect from a good example of the style - ripe dark fruits, wine, a little tobacco. The flavor is solid, but doesn’t quite live up the nose. The sourness in this beer is "broad" in that it hits early and lingers well into the finish, but it never quite reaches the brilliant, refreshing heights of some of the best Belgians. I could also do with a little more malt sweetness to back the sourness. Palate is spot on for the style. Overall a great beer.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
EBF rate. Pours a medium brown with a small offwhite head that leaves some lacing. Nose is of nice cherries, grapes and light on the vinegar (I feared otherwise). Taste is lightly sweet and lightly tart, nicely balanced. Body is light, carbonation moderate and acidity really refreshing. Nice one! Soft and easy drinking enough american sour.

sample @ EBF 2015. cloudy dark amber with a small creamy beige cap, some retention and lacing. juicy berries, chewy bretts - cherry brettiness, winey character - red wine - astringent if not woody; spicy and sweet tobacco, light to medium acidity - some acetic tingling, some citric; other spices, grass, herbs and pepper. average to light carbonation, medium body - oily; tart and oaky-grassy-spicy finish. not overly complex but a nicely crafted/blended medium dark sour. enjoyed!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Haand Festival 2014. It’s an unclear, orange-brown beer with a small, off-white head. It’s lightly funky on the nose, with caramel maltyness and a hint of balsamic vinegar. It’s dry and tart on the palate, with a pleasant carbonation level, and flavors of caramel malts in the back, with some dried fruit notes, balsamic vinegar and a good funky touch. Lasting finish with a light vinegar sourness. An easy drinkable and tasteful beer that is far from as frightening as the name and bottle design might lead you to think. 140524

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from footbalm. Thanks Eric! It pours a dark ruby, black cherry color with a thin khaki head. The aroma jumps out as a bit acetic with some tart and sweet cherries, hints of diluted molasses, a little leather, vanilla and wood. The flavor has strong sweet cherries and a pretty good amount of spicy acetic acid and balsamic vinegar. The sweet cherry flavors balance it up front, but it does kinda burn on the way down a little. There’s hints of woody, vinous notes of spoiled wine and vanilla in the finish. Caramel comes through stronger as it warms, but this is still an acid forward sour. A decent beer and fun to drink.
