Tasted at Stanley’s Beer and Bacon Fest - May 17th, 2014 during Art-A-Whirl in Northeast. Notes were a bit light.

Pours a dark copper-brown with small, lingering head. Aroma of malt, bread, caramel. Flavor was very smooth, with the oak quite distinct, along with a lot of sweet malt, caramel, coffee, etc.

2 oz. or smaller pour, on tap at St. Paul Summer Beer Fest. Consumed on 6-7-14. Pours a bright, light to medium brown with a red/amber hue and taupe head. Juicy, German aroma. Tangy flavor includes citrus and lemon elements as well as roastedness. Soft and crisp in the palate. It’s interesting that Surly was able to produce its classic soft palate effect in a lager. Light to medium body. Another solid effort from Surly, although not one of their better beers overall, mainly because it is hard to excel in the Dunkel style. More aromatic and flavorful than is typical in the style or among non-big lagers in general.

A grayish brown? Light smoky aroma, some dusty malt. That makes it sound awful but it’s not really. Lightly smoky and oak flavor, sweet creamy caramel. Not bad, kind of a dull style.

Draft. Just a poorly executed dunkel. Not sure if it was lagered in oak but judging by the tartness I would say no.

Nice stuff. Pours a dark honey brown. Attractive head and lacing. Aromas of honey and vanilla. Flavors of honey and roasted malts. Nice.

Tap at Pizza Luce. Chestnut brown color with basically no head and minimal lacing. Aromas of caramel, grain and hay. Taste is very mellow with a light caramel sweetness. Body is watery. It always seems surprising to drink a mellow beer from Surly.

sudomorph (844) - Barrie, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 16, 2014
On draft at Northbound Smokehouse. Pours a clear caramel with a nice, off white head. Aroma is faint with slight caramel and mild fruity esters. Taste is slightly on thealty side. Caramel with some more traditional hops for balance. Medium body and carbonation. Smooth lager texture in the mouth. Overall tasty and drinkable with some nice caramel notes and a smooth texture.

nimbleprop (5567) - SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA - MAY 13, 2014
4oz pour at Churchkey DC. Pours a clear caramel amber with some creamy, white head. Nose is quite nice, some caramel malt, a little pear, apple, earthy, perhaps a hint of wood, a definite hint of smoke. Flavor is very nice, gentle, malt, apple, pear, light wood, light caramel, a little cream soda. Medium bodied, crisp finish. Well crafted.
