This beer is named after the german word meaning 'pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others.' Ahh those wacky Germans! This beer is a fun change of pace from the hops war. Malty, a bit sweet, easy to drink. What more could you ask for sitting outside on a perfect Minnesota day? ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Busters. Pours clear red brown with a quick off white tight soapy head that fades. Aroma is malty a little burnt and a subtle sweetness like honey or roasted plum. Taste has subtle bitterness and roasted malt with a woody fruitiness. Palate is slick and sticky with a drying finish. Very easy drinking and enjoyable!

Got this from Loring Kitchen & Bar at the release party. Pours a deep ruby with minimal white head. If you hold it up to the light, you can see that it’s very clear. The aroma is mildly woody, with some hints of molasses hiding behind an otherwise bready character. The taste is malty, lightly toasted, and very oaky. Some vanilla comes through, as well as a nice caramel character. Clean finish. It’s a subtler beer for Surly, but quite good.

Serving glass: Poured from tap into Pint glass. Appearance: Dark ruby-brown with medium-sized head. Aroma: Caramel, bread and a light smokiness. Way too mild. Taste: Somewhat sweet caramel backbone with some light roasted characteristics (chocolate, coffee). Just a hint of smoke, oak and noble hops. Palate: Moderate carbonation, fairly light body. Little too sweet overall for my personal tastes. Overall: Despite the mild aroma and slightly too sweet body, this is pretty damn good for a Dunkel. While not my favorite Surly by a long shot, I have to appreciate what they have accomplished here.

UPDATED: SEP 28, 2011 Tap in a pint glass at Surly Brewery. This beer seemed bland at first because I tried it right after sampling Surly’s Moe’s Bender. Schadenfreude is much more subtle, and after my palate cleared from the Moe’s Bender, I found this to be a smooth and delicious beer. This one should be sampled first before stronger flavored beers to enjoy it the most.

on tap at the Surly tour pours brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is toast, caramel and wood. Flavor is rich and malty with sweet caramel and bitter nuts and toast. Really nicely done and highly drinkable.

On tap at DLD ’11. A simple, nice dark lager with a medium carbonated body, which made for decent drinking. Cola-like in appearance, with a darker, brown cream head. In the aroma, some roasty, dark malts, caramel, grass, and grain malt. Light bodied, though quite drinkable with a decent bitterness. A complimentary flavor profile to the aroma, with a fair amount of roasted malts mixed the lager grassiness. Not too bad here.

Guest tap at Dark Lord Day 2011. Pours a cloudy brown colored body with a finger-width, creamy, tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma is rich caramel with some bread, dark fruits, a light cocoa, and a touch of earth. Flavor is similar. Nice caramel up front with a light, earthy cocoa and some bready malts. Pleasant, clean lager-like fruits before this finishes with a light bitterness. A touch of roast in there before leaving a medium length aftertaste. Light, smooth body and moderate, soft carbonation. Overall, a tasty lager. Nothing crazy, but well balanced and easy drinking.

UPDATED: MAY 12, 2013 It’s a very drinkable dark beer, pretty light on the mouth but has a nice lasting roasty flavor. Can’t get enough of this beer this year, its a target at all the summer festivals.

Tap. Cola brown in color with a small off white head. Light bread aroma, slight roast coffee. Just too light. Taste is caramel, slight chocolate, and sweet cream. Slightly dry with a creamy and fairly light body.
