3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft sample from the brewery tonight. Dark brown pour, medium carbonation and a light malty aroma. Flavor is slightly nutty, well balanced malt, earthy and finished a little dry. Decent, but nowhere near my favorite beer that Surly has produced to date.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark brown color with faint head. A nice crisp lager nose with a hint of dark malts. The body is a very solid lager with just a hint of oak. Enough to be interesting but not offensive like so many oak aged beers. Lovely.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
(tap at Stub’s) Pours dark brown/black with just a thin light tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, toast, clove, coffee, and maybe a hint of banana. I really enjoyed the flavor and found it to possess a passing resemblance to Black Wheat. Roasted malt, chocolate, clove, banana, dark roasted coffee, and bread are all present here. The finish is dry from the oak and roasty/smoky. Mouthfeel is light which prompts further drinks. A nice, CLEAN, and well balanced dunkel that is refreshing to see from Surly.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Pours reddish black with thin off white head, aroma is fairly lacking but has some notes of oak and dark fruit. Taste up front is biscuity and bready malt, going into a bit of dark fruit sweetness that finishes a bit smoky and dry from the oak. Good tasting, great sessionable brew, but overall nothing too amazing here flavor-wise.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the Map Room. Pours a ruby and crimson hued brown with a medium sized beige and tan head. Toast, light roast, malt, and a little lemon. Malty, lightly tart, as if there was some acidulated malt in there. Light coffee and cocoa. Finishes dry with some toast and a bit more roast. Decent brown, but not mind boggling. Probably better than an average brown, but not what I think of in terms of quality when I think of Surly.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
On draught at the Señor Wong Restaurant in downtown St Paul, MN. Pours a semi-clear amber brown colored brew with an average sized beige head that quickly dissipates to a thin film top. Aroma of caramel malt, a hint of stollen bread, figs and a touch of biscuit crust. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of caramel malt, a touch of chocolate, some light vanilla, roasted nuts and some spice. Finish is slightly sweet, very soft bitterness and then a mild caramel and toffee aftertaste. Not the Surly hop bite as its brewing reputation but it is everything I expect in a regular dunkel with a hint of oak-age smoothness.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at Map Room. Pours brown with a tan head. Aroma of caramel malt, and some fruit. Didn’t seem like much of a Dunkel and was sort of light in flavor. Some sweet malt - I was hoping for a little more from Surly.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draft at Kuma’s. Pours a pleasant deep brown with a fluffy offwhite head. Nose is toasted malt, not much else. Maybe some cocoa? Taste, I get some tart cherry notes (probably from the oak), toast and a dry finish. Pretty decent, though the cherry notes are distracting. Okay.

Tap. Pour is deep clear brown with a thin beige head. Aroma is lightly smokey, lightly sweet, and faintly spicy. Flavor is also lightly smokey and spicy with hints of roasted malt and light spice. It’s fine.
