COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a Dunkel we brewed and aged on oak for CBC in Chicago. Some kegs will stay in Minnesota too.

Draft. Medium beige head atop lightly hazed dark amber body. Aroma is medium sweet, orange, some spicy, light wood, earthy. Taste is medium sweet, orange, spicy, some bread/caramel, wood, light earthy, wood sourness. Light-medium body, low carbonation.

Tap @ Grumpys NE. Pours a hazy dark orange appearance with a light brown head. Somewhat nutty, mild caramel, fairly dry, toasted malty aroma. A touchfruity, orange, a touch sweet malty, light chocolate, light caramel, a bit woody flavor. Ok.

Draft. Just a poorly executed dunkel. Not sure if it was lagered in oak but judging by the tartness I would say no.

On tap at the Map Room. Pours a ruby and crimson hued brown with a medium sized beige and tan head. Toast, light roast, malt, and a little lemon. Malty, lightly tart, as if there was some acidulated malt in there. Light coffee and cocoa. Finishes dry with some toast and a bit more roast. Decent brown, but not mind boggling. Probably better than an average brown, but not what I think of in terms of quality when I think of Surly.

On tap at SPSBF. Pours a clear deep red with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has some dark grains with a bit of smokiness and a backing earthing oak note. Flavor again has dark grains with a hint of dark fruit and a good amount of oak barrel underlying.

Pours reddish black with thin off white head, aroma is fairly lacking but has some notes of oak and dark fruit. Taste up front is biscuity and bready malt, going into a bit of dark fruit sweetness that finishes a bit smoky and dry from the oak. Good tasting, great sessionable brew, but overall nothing too amazing here flavor-wise.

UPDATED: DEC 30, 2013 Tap at Stub’s. Dark brown pour with a small white head. Aroma is bread and caramel. Mouthfeel is a bit thin and carbonated. Taste is caramel and malt. Decent.

UPDATED: JUL 31, 2010 Draft on tap at Hopleaf (Chicago, IL). Set out to grab this when I found out it was around. Pours a dark brown, translucent with lighter edges of red, a moderate tannish beige head, brighter, laces ok overall. Aromas are caramel and toffee malt base, dark plum, bread and biscuits, a bit sweeter slanted with faint floral hopping. Initial is similar, lighter side of medium bodied with dark fruit, faint sweet cherry, caramel and toffee, biscuits, bread, light toasty nut. A bit thin for the style, a touch of warming alcohol is more noticeable with the thinner than expected body. Light bitterness, sweet malts overall. Ok, probably shouldn’t have driven out for this as Drew said. Rerate: more roast and camrleized sugar than I remember, that kiss of cherry and dark fruit is still there providing a decent flavor. I bumped this up a couple points. Better flavors that I remember.

Skyview (5150) - Papoose Jct, Minnesota, USA - APR 28, 2010
On draught at the Seńor Wong Restaurant in downtown St Paul, MN. Pours a semi-clear amber brown colored brew with an average sized beige head that quickly dissipates to a thin film top. Aroma of caramel malt, a hint of stollen bread, figs and a touch of biscuit crust. Taste is medium bodied, with flavors of caramel malt, a touch of chocolate, some light vanilla, roasted nuts and some spice. Finish is slightly sweet, very soft bitterness and then a mild caramel and toffee aftertaste. Not the Surly hop bite as its brewing reputation but it is everything I expect in a regular dunkel with a hint of oak-age smoothness.

4oz pour at Churchkey DC. Pours a clear caramel amber with some creamy, white head. Nose is quite nice, some caramel malt, a little pear, apple, earthy, perhaps a hint of wood, a definite hint of smoke. Flavor is very nice, gentle, malt, apple, pear, light wood, light caramel, a little cream soda. Medium bodied, crisp finish. Well crafted.
