Continuing our quest to despoil and desecrate conventional beer styles, we’re raiding Trappist traditions to produce this Belgian Style Ale brewed with Rye, Oats and Wheat. Our first beer EVER brewed with Wheat! Belgian yeast creates classic clove-spiced banana aroma and flavor. Dry hopping brings floral and citrus aromatics to the biscuity-smooth malt body.

750mL yellow wax shared at Congregation Azusa. Poured clear red with weaker foam. Nose is sugar, alcohol, orange liquor like Grand Marnier. Taste is sugar, booze, sticky as hell with cloying finish. A tad papery and bland in the aftertaste. Wasn’t for me :/

Beautiful ruby reddish orange. Small wispy white head that lasted. Fruity. fermented fruit, banana, alcohol. Quite boozey but pleasant enough.

750 ml bottle courtesy of an extra via trade. Shared at the Lushawn Pre-wedding Bonfire. Neate. Pours a deeper brownish amber hue, a good firm haziness, orange glow on the bottom and edhes. Frothy beige head sits atop and laces well. Frothy and sticks around. Aromas are a bit toasty, carmelized malt and a bit of sweetness. Gentle ester, some banana and orange, touches of apple. A gentle earthy hopping, spicy yeast. Initial is firmer bodied, sweeter malt presence bites up front with a bit of toast, estery fruit, gentle orange and banana. Bit of apple, carmelized malt and toast. Some gentle spice, yeastiness. Middle is a bit sweet, gummy, and some vanilla, estery fruit meets some gentle spice. Some dryness, spice, and Belgian influence offers some good if sweeter flavors. Spice, oranges and banana, a bit of marshmellow. Finish is spicy, a bit toasty, a touch of caramel, carmelized malts. Wow. A bit sweet, a bit big. Mellow spice, decent dry earthy hops finish up. Solid, a bit sweet and messy in my book. The esters from the wheat malt presence give some life. Not my thing though. Looks pretty.

750 ml bottle shared by TheAlum- thanks again, Adam! Pours a dark brown with some reddish highlights and a little bit of off-white head that sticks only as a ring. Notes of clove, banana, wheat, rye spice, brown sugar, caramel, and dark and dried fruits. Boozy throughout, overly so. Medium-full bodied, with a malty, spicy, warming mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Not really my thing. Maybe this one needs a year or more of age to settle down and smooth out.

For a first try at the Belgian wheat style, they nailed it. The aroma was full of clove, yeast, straw and some lemongrass. It was on the sweet side with more yeast and sweet-bread undertones while a pleasant citrusy zest came through as it warmed up. Good job!

Bottle into snifter. I was really impressed with this one. I got plenty of Belgian yeast, dark fruits, wheat, clove, spices, light banana, and an assertive hop aroma. I loved the hops in there. Flavor is similar with a nice but more subtle hop presence that balanced out the heavy Belgian yeast character and maltiness. Great stuff.

I’m not much of a Belgian drinker, but this one was worth the experience. Nice amber color and a thicker head with a slight banana aroma. Also experienced a bready/butterscotch flavor on the back end. Very smooth, and didn’t clog my sinuses like most Belgians.

Tap at bricks. Pour is clear Amber, thin white head that sticks to the glass. Aroma is malty bread, caramel, raisins, fig, slight toast. Taste is plum, raisins, rye with some wheat sweetness, a little rum, cherries, lemon and honey on the back end, some alcohol.

On tap at Surly. Pours a caramel color with white head. Caramel, rye, spicy flavors with a little alcohol burn. I wasn’t extremely impressed.

Dark brown/red with a filmy brown head. Strong banana smell upfront backed up by cloves, caramel malts and a slight hoppiness. Taste is a strong mix of bananas, rye, oak, cloves, wheat, caramel malts and yeasts; A tiny bit boozy but easy to overlook. Body is on the lighter side along with the carbonation so it goes down pretty easily.
