Continuing our quest to despoil and desecrate conventional beer styles, we’re raiding Trappist traditions to produce this Belgian Style Ale brewed with Rye, Oats and Wheat. Our first beer EVER brewed with Wheat! Belgian yeast creates classic clove-spiced banana aroma and flavor. Dry hopping brings floral and citrus aromatics to the biscuity-smooth malt body.

Had at Surlys release party! Such a solid Belgian style! Lots of typical Belgian to this, bread, banana, clove, and a spicyness/ funky jazz from the Brett used in it. Really surprised me.

From the Seviinth anniversary party. Pours a deep red with very little white head. Smell is dry and fruity, some banana but mostly citrus. Taste is bananas up front, with some rye spiciness, a pleasant biscuity malt flavor, and a slightly bitter citrus rind finish. Has a nice, velvety mouthfeel from the combination of wheat and oats. Doesn’t taste like it’s 12.5%.

On tap at the 7th anniversary party. Reddish brown pour with a minimal off-white head. Aroma has a little wheaty funk, but is still dominated by the biscuit and dark fruit malt notes. The flavor verges on cloyingly sweet, with the malt really taking over, but this is tempered nicely at the finish by the brett, which adds some welcome sourness/funk. Good beer, and very easy drinking considering 12.5%. Looking forward to seeing what next year holds for Surly.
