Continuing our quest to despoil and desecrate conventional beer styles, we’re raiding Trappist traditions to produce this Belgian Style Ale brewed with Rye, Oats and Wheat. Our first beer EVER brewed with Wheat! Belgian yeast creates classic clove-spiced banana aroma and flavor. Dry hopping brings floral and citrus aromatics to the biscuity-smooth malt body.

On tap at the 7th anniversary party. Reddish brown pour with a minimal off-white head. Aroma has a little wheaty funk, but is still dominated by the biscuit and dark fruit malt notes. The flavor verges on cloyingly sweet, with the malt really taking over, but this is tempered nicely at the finish by the brett, which adds some welcome sourness/funk. Good beer, and very easy drinking considering 12.5%. Looking forward to seeing what next year holds for Surly.

Bottled sample shared with oakbluff. Tan in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of salted caramel, pale malt, and red apple skin. Spicy and thick in the mouth, with elements of white pepper, wheat berries, and orchard fruit. Not feeling this one. Sorry Surly.

Danish tasting session
I wrote down 8% ABV but it could be a mistake…

Hazy dark amber color with fizzy medium sized head. The aroma seems a bit soapy. Full bodied, malt flavor, sweetish, a bit alcoholic, lightly fruity, with some esters, and light soap touch; ordinary bitterness. Too much alcohol in the final, hot.

Bottle @ Yespr. Pours near clear orange/amber with a quickly diminishing frothy white head. Aroma is sweet with fudge, sugars, toasted malt, clove, cellary, overripe banana, bread and mild citrus. Taste is moderate sweet and Body is medium. Finishes sweet, hot and mild spicy.

Bottle share @ Surly Darkness day 2013. Pour is golden with some slight ruby tinting and a bubbly white head. Aroma and flavor of cane sugar, orange peel, raisin, maple syrup, banana, cloves, and booze. Finish is on the sweeter side with a spicy aftertaste.

On tap at GTWM 2013. Sugary sweet, not that good. Copper body. Really unimpressive. Would’ve been quite disappointed if I had thrown down on a bottle.
