3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber via in-person DLD trade thanks to translucent on BA.
Pours just about black with a small fading off-white head.
Aroma is somewhat smoky along with roast, chocolate, and anise.
Flavor is nice, full, and balanced. Roasted malt, dark chocolate, caramel, and smoke.
Smooth mouthfeel with fairly full body for a lager.
Very solid beer overall. Even better than I expected this would be as a highly rated beer from a brewery I really like.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
My Bottom Line:
Dark chocolate, crunchy cereals and beechwood smoke converge in this classy Barrel-Aged Smoked Baltic Porter.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the brown-edged blackness.
-The mouthfeel is relatively dry; this is not your usual portly NAmerican dessert brew.
-Roasted malts offer a few flavors, but remain subdued.
-Alcohol is not too apparent, which I appreciate.
-This is perhaps not as complex as the Ola Dubh 40 we had right before, but it is as flavorful and elegant.

The first two bottles I had I did not care for this beer because the flavor was too overwhelming. Months later i still had a bottle to drink so I gave it another try. This time around I enjoyed the beer alot. Pours black with a creamy brown head. Smells just like it tastes. Goes well with grill food or anything hickory flavored. You can actully taste a hint of bacon flavoring.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
I originally had this at Darkness Day but wanted to wait a bit until I could sit down and review it properly. This time, it was on at Sheffield’s. Poured into snifter.
A - Black, thin head, no lacing and no retention. Just a glass full of black liquid...not saying that it’s a bad thing.
S - Smoke, dark fruity sweetness, black liquorice.
T - Similar to the nose. A good amount of smoke notes (I recall a lot more smoke notes at Darkness Day), subtle sweetness, a dark chocolate bitter finish.
M - Medium bodied, smooth, rich, dry finish.
D - Easy to drink, no real hint of alcohol. Another winner by Surly.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
This poured a dark brown color with a smaller beige head, courtesy of a generous man from DLD 10. Aroma was lots of thick campfire smoke, with roasted coffee poking through as well. Flavor was a bit disappointing, lots of smoked meats, and coffee, but tthese tastes seemd to be too separate and did not blend well together.

Super rich nutty smoked almond aroma. Carries through lightly to the flavor along with great dry cocoa notes. Great stuff.

750ml bottle, with yet another thanks to tytoanderso! Pours dark brown with a moderate tan head that dissipates to a razor thin ring. Aroma is a nice nose of light campfire and meaty smoke, some chocolate, a little espresso, some oak and earthiness. Flavor is nicely baltic porter, with more smoke, chocolate, espresso, oak and earthy hops. This one is right up my alley, thanks again Ty!

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pretty rich smokey beer from Surly. Had this on tap in Chicago and although my review was a bit vague, I described it in this manner: Dark brownish black. Big campfire smokiness with a full meltdown of chocolate, smores, black licorice and barbecue. Noticeable boozer. But pleasent all around!

Bottle from tytoanderso, thanks!!
I really enjoyed this beer and think it’s great. Wonderful smokey nose followed up by an expertly brewed, well balanced beer, where the smokiness is complemented beautifully by other flavors

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from tytoanderso - thanks! Pours a brown black with not much head. Aroma is sesame, oak, coffee and smoke. Has a nice smoked pine/oak aroma and nose. Not overkill, and not too little. Finishes clean. Flavor is lightly sweet, but not too sweet at all.
