Tried on my pre-birthday bash (..."a very merry unbirthday... to me? TO YOU!"). To snifter it pours a dark purplish brown with virtually zero head at all, just bubbles and a thin line of foam is the only thing which seems to stop someone from asking if this is indeed a beer. Has some decent lace, however. Aromas of fudge, caramelized raisins, brown sugar, peanut brittle, and a faint yet unmistakeable ash characteristic. Can’t smell too much oak, however. Tastes bittersweet and earthy with notes of grape skins, liquid coffee, black olives, American yeast, smoke and and stale Pepsi. Licorice, hops, and soil by swallow. Very thin but slushes around nicely in your mouth. Interesting. Not the best I’ve had from Surly. I had such high hopes.

CBC. Black with a big, lasting and dense light brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt, wood and smoke - bonfire. Flavor is quite sweet and moderate bitter. Dry and roasted moderate bitter finish. 040513

750 ml. bottle. Pours almost black with a nice tan head. Aroma of malt, smoke, chocolate, and ham. Taste is roasted malt, smoke, chocolate, ham, and wood. Unique for sure. Glad I tried it.

Tap @ CBC. Black with small tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, smoke, little meat and chocolate. Flavour is roasted malts, smoke, meidum sweet, little meat, caramel, wood, hop and a little bitter.

[5/4/13] Draught at Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2013. Dark brown to black color with a big beige head. Roasty and smoky aroma with meaty notes. Flavor of smoked and roasted malt, a bit of chocolate, hints of licorice and a bitter alcoholic finish. Medium-bodied.

Sample @ CBC. Nice head with good duration. Color is black. Aroma and taste are caramel, wood, vegetables, smoke, malt and hops.

Draught @ CBC2013. Pours hazy black with a beige head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly sweet and slightly malty with roasted malts, charred wood, smoke, dark roast coffee, butterscotch hardcandy, bitter chocolate, moist soil and hints of peat. Taste is sweet, bitter and malty with roasted malts, smoke, charred wood, peat, dark roast coffee, bitter chocolate, salty liquorice, moist soil, burnt cookies and hints of burnt caramel and butterscotch harcandy. Mouthfeel is round, soft and medium to full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet, bitter and slightly malty with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, smoke, charred wood, bitter chocolate, hay and hints of smoked salmon. Very tasty...
