Tap at Stubs. Very nice subtle smoke on the nose, but not as recognizable as the former Dahmer. Nice sweet bark roasted malt and a touch of that bacony smoky goodness. THe oak seems to have mellowed the smoke out a little bit, as this is slightly thinner and more subdued. A spectacular beer, but I prefer the original wersion from ABR.

Draft ABR 07. POurs a nice ruby tinged dark brown. Nice applewood bacon smokiness on the nose as well as a good dose of sweet almost ripe fruit like malty sweetness. Nice creamy mouthfeel with a good dose of the smoke coming out but pairing well with the chocolate, ripe fruit, and nutty sweetness from the malt. A very nice beer.

GABF ’08. Hi Hapjy. A beast of flavorful smoky balance. Badass nose...scarier than the flavor. I dig it...now to wash it down with some furious.

2012 Bottle. Pours a dark brown, almost black with ruby legs and a medium, foamy, tan head and some lacing. Aroma is caramel malt, raisins, plums, and some woody smokiness. Several layers of flavor noted: caramel malt with chocolate, molasses, and brown sugar; sweet dark fruit including plums, dates, figs, raisins, and berries; and some nice but not overpowering smokiness with oak and meatiness, almost bacon flavors. Medium body with good carbonation and some alcohol noticeable but fitting. Great brew all around.

Sweet smokey aroma with notes of chocolate, coffee, and toffee. It has a very pronounced oak-smoked bitter taste with a slightly bitter/astringent finish. Flavors of chocolate, oak, smoke, dark malts, and hops. Very unique beer that is a good after dinner sipper. This pairs nicely while enjoying a smoke or for any sipping occasion. Bring a friend, this stuff packs a nice punch!

Had at official release at the Pig. Served to cold, no smoke aroma or taste. Once warmed for a bit, it was smokey sausage/bacon goodness! Very easy going down, not as much hops as you might expect from Surly, fairly balanced. Towards the end of the glass the smoke aroma and flavor really came out and was best. One of Surly’s finest.

Ummm, this smells lovely, smokey good. Very dark color with some good hop bite(who’d a thunk it?) I have only had a few other B.P and I enjoyed this better then the Gonzo, cause i like hops. Todd said he is going to put this in oak barrells before the offical release, so it will be fun to try it then and see what it does. Good stuff!

On tap @ Muddy Pig. Looks jet black with decent head and decent lacing. Aroma is campfire and hickory smoked bacon. This is a unique smelling beer. Taste follows suit with heavily roasted malts, some smoke, and overall pretty sweet at first, subsiding to a smoky bitterness that was just slightly too much. I mean, it’s what I came for, but in the end it didn’t agree with me as much as I hoped it would.

Smells like a campfire and tastes like it too. Some smoked beef comes through as well. It is good, but would go great with smoked salmon or smoked cheese.

22oz bottle poured into small pub glass. Pours a dark brown almost black in color with a moderate white head. Aroma of smoked malts. Medium carbonation with smooth mouthfeel. Taste of roastiness/smokiness however not overwhelming like other smoked ales, nicely balanced. Great showing by Surly
