3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared by Rasmusott - been wanting to try this for quite a while, so it’s really cool to finally try it, although it did disappoint. Pours black with a red hue, not really head on this. Aroma is smokey, wood, dark berries, earthy mineral notes in the lines of the smokey component, blackberry jam, notes of pepper and cinnamon, liquorice, raisins and prunes. Rather nice aroma, although the smoke is a bit off with the earthy character. The taste resembles the smoke from the nose with these earthy mineral notes, which are kind of off. Chocolate notes, prunes, raisins, slightly woody, but nowhere near as complex as the aroma. The lager yeast makes the mouthfeel surprisingly light, and the carbonation is very mild, could use a bit more. Glad to have tried it.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
750ml, silver waxed bottle, 2010 edition courtesy of stbroome on BA. thanks, steve! pours a deep, dark brown with an interestingly light khaki head with sticky lacing. aroma is great with big, smoked, ashy malts and salty bacon that by no means overpower the other aromas of roasted almonds, caramel, and dark fruit notes of cherry and fig with hints of coffee, and oaked vanilla as it warms. flavor is delicious as well with smooth, smokey campfire, roasted malts, and dark chocolate backed by notes of charred salami, sweet vanilla, and dark fruits with dry, piney hops, trail mix, and oak on the back end. palate is medium bodied with light carbonation and no trace of alcohol making this one extremely drinkable.overall, a delicious smoked baltic porter.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
FoBAB 2007. Dark dark brown to light black with a razor thin creamy white head. Subdued nose. Small smoke, ala Aecht Schlenkerla Marzen. Small oaky tannins. Some roast, relatively dry, tiny chocolate. Not thick or thin, just right with low CO2. Big sweet flavor, that I just couldn’t smell! This is a like a badass sweet Aecht Schlenkerla Marzen! More dark malt character, of course. Big smoke. Sweet, but not cloying. Oak and alcohol balance the sweetness. The roast comes on in the finish. A dry oaky finish. This is probably the most creative beer at FoBAB 2007, and the one most up my alley.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Sampled at the 2008 Great American Beer Festival. This was another awesome offering from Surly at GABF, alongside their Two ale. Aroma is loaded with smoke and charred wood. Big burnt flavor with notes of dark cacao, barbecue smokehouse and oak barrel. Very nice palate that makes the beer surprisingly drinkable. Earthy smoke lingers after each sip.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle. Pours a really dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma is of smoked malts, lots of smoked pork aromas like bacon, sausage and ham, some subtle oak, dark fruits, roasted malt, campfire notes, burnt wood and subtle vanilla. The flavor follows the nose with lots of smoke flavors of burnt wood, smoked pork, ham, sausage and bacon, roasted malt, dark fruits, roasted malt, oak and vanilla. The body is on the full side of medium with a creamy mouth feel. Overall a really tasty Smoked Baltic Porter!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Thanks to largadeer for opening this at the post-post-RS party tasting. Reviewed from notes. Poured into a taster glass.
A - Pours black with a very tiny mocha colored head leaving no lacing at all down the glass.
S - Good amount of roasted malts up front but the smoke is not far behind. Some nice chocolate and vanilla sweetness comes thru as the smokey darkness begins to let up. Just o.k. really.
T - Plenty of dark roasted malts in this one. A nice mix of chocolate and coffee flavors starts to break thru once the smokey malt dies down a bit. The smoke is quite pronounced as you might expect and never really leaves the party. Not too bad but nothing mind blowing here.
M - Medium-Heavy body and flavors with moderately low carbonation. A bit light in the feel with tons of lingering smokey dark roast in the finish.
D - Decent stuff. I enjoy porters quite a bit but this one was just too smokey to really enjoy. I could drink one of these but that is about it.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Rich and creamy, with a strong smokey nose of bacon fat and pepperoni. Sweet black fruits fill out the palate and add contrast along with a candy sugar edge over the malty roasted cocoa underbelly, with complex smoked meat nuances lingering. Layered and multi-dimensional.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at BSAF. Poured a deep brown/black color witha creamy quarter-inch beige head that faded to a thick layer. Aroma of smoke, light meat, chocolate, roasted malts, and some dark fruit. Smooth, moderately sweet entry with some smoke leads into a sweet chocolaty flavor paired with some roasted malts along with undertones of dark fruit (plum and grape) that leads into a moderately dry, oaky finish with some lingering smoke. Moderate carbonation and nice mouthfeel. I really enjoyed this beer, I wish it was bottled.
