4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On cask at Busterís for the one year anniversary appreciation party. The beer was opaque black with essentially no head. In the aroma and flavor there was moderate smoke and moderate sweet burnt malt. (It was almost peaty.) The hops were almost non-existent. It was a bit watery with no carbonation, but very smooth. As it warmed the smoke got fainter. Very drinkable, one of my favorite Surly beers!

This beer is really what it says it is... crack the top and youíre drinking a mesquite BBQ pit. Not the absolute best beer in the world, but I give props for a beer being what it is supposed to be, and doing it well. I will most definitely buy again, its unique flavor is unmatched even if it is just that.. unique. Awesome logo too.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
A. This bear pours a beautiful pitch black color, with a light caramel head about 1 finger thick. It faded to a nice thin ring, with a little lily pad making itís way around the center.
S. Smells of light caramel, strong bacon and of course, smoke. The bacon smell is really dominate. Almost the same as when you first set a piece into a hot pan. I can almost hear the crackle when I smell this beer :)
S. A noticeable hickory comes out first, that holds through even after your done drinking. A a smoked, almost burnt toffee taste comes through extremely smoothly. It isnít at all overbearing. The malts are noticeable, but not a dominate trait.
M. Very smooth flavor, that is not at all hard to drink. The flavor is thick and bold, but it still feels light on the tongue. Just a hint of dryness on the finish.
O. Overall this is a complex beer, that is extremely smooth and very easy to drink. I could see spending many hours at a bar not trying anything else if this was on-tap. It delivers everything you expect from Surly. Unlike a lot of their beers that tend to take a style to itís extreme, I think this hits spot on for what I would expect to see in a quality baltic porter.
This is by far one of the top beers I have ever had! It is amazingly smooth and easy to drink. The flavors are bold, but also complex. Itís not a one sided smoke flavor like often what happens with Porters. The tastes changes and matures in your mouth. I look forward to having this beer again and again.

First sip had me slightly taken aback, halfway through I was really starting to love this beer, last sip had me ordering another. One of the most unique beers Iíve had, has very complex notes of flavor that all shine in thier own way. Recommend trying this one if you have an open mind and can appreciate the oddity that makes it special.

Most Baltic porters have a similar flavor, but Surly has managed a unique brew with this one. The addition of smoke fits in nicely; something I rarely like, but do in this beer. Tasty! Strong beer, so not a session ale.

The first two bottles I had I did not care for this beer because the flavor was too overwhelming. Months later i still had a bottle to drink so I gave it another try. This time around I enjoyed the beer alot. Pours black with a creamy brown head. Smells just like it tastes. Goes well with grill food or anything hickory flavored. You can actully taste a hint of bacon flavoring.

1.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 1/20
There is nothing wrong with the appearance or aroma, but this could be the most disgusting beer ever made. At a beer tasting, 9 out of 10 tasters considered this beer the worst beer ever made. The only discussion over this beer was what purpose it could serve. Possible solutions are beer batter, base for BBQ sauce, or marinade.

UPDATED: SEP 28, 2011 Tap in a pint glass at Surly Brewery. Wow! This one had a great smokey smell and flavor - Iíve never tried any other smoked beers and this was a great introduction! An interesting and complex lager, with the flavors changing as I sipped. Very strong in alcohol content as well as flavor. I definitely want to drink this again!

2012 bottle. Pitch black, with a white/smokey white head. Aroma is smoke malts, campfire smoke like, roasted, sweet malts, some vanilla. Taste follows the nose almost perfectly. The way the smoke flavors mingle with the malt characteristics is extremely well balanced. Nice slightly dry finish. Overall for me almost as good as Left Handís Smokejumper, but extremely well done! Cheers!
