Extremely smooth and creamy mouthfeel, with a signficant and controlled smokey taste, with the porter complexty behind it. Thanks Mista.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAR 12, 2012 750mL courtesy of beeranddogs. Pour is clear, deep, cola brown looking deep cola brown in the glass with highlights. Really no head- some cola fizziness erupts and settles down wickedly fast. No retention. No lace. Aroma is not even smoky: instead there is something medicinal, black cherry soda, cherry juice box, a touch of briney Kalamata olives. As it warms a hint of smokiness comes through but is layered atop some alcohol notes. Taste is bit like burnt plastic, cola sweetness coming in for the rescue but only succeeding in making the beer taste like flat vanilla cherry Coke. Palate is fizzy, fairly thin. 12/12/2010 7/3/6/3/13=3.2
Tap at CK. Deep pour with a thinner tan head. Deep clear black ruby. Rich, smoked meat nose with heavy bacon. Aecht Schlenkerla style. Taste is thinner, lemon tart, nicely roasty. Thinner mouthfeel like a schwarzbier. Just a little bit too much tobacco and dirt and less oily bacon fat. Still quite nice.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This beer pours a dark brownish-black color with a medium tan head that recedes to a film eventually. Spotty lacing on the glass. Smoky, roasty aroma with notes of malt and chocolate. Medium body with a subtle smoked character, possibly tempered by the oak aging? Notes of dark chocolate and coffee as well. The finish is roasted malt with a touch of dark fruit on the back end. Pretty good overall.

Deep brown pour. The nose is great with lots of bright smoke over a deep dark malty base. Rich and chocolatey with a lingering smokiness. Rich and sweet with a dark maltiness. Earthy bitterness and a rich chewy palate. Very nice.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAR 31, 2009 Nearly 100% pitch black color with a creamy dark brown head. Smoke level is medium in the nose, there’s quite a bit of chocolate and coffee, a little roast and some small amount of creamy milk notes as well. Full and slick texture, chalky chocolate and resinous coffee, smoke is minimal... the meat of this beer is the creamy chocolate and wood... decadent stuff. Impressive.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
My Bottom Line:
Dark chocolate, crunchy cereals and beechwood smoke converge in this classy Barrel-Aged Smoked Baltic Porter.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the brown-edged blackness.
-The mouthfeel is relatively dry; this is not your usual portly NAmerican dessert brew.
-Roasted malts offer a few flavors, but remain subdued.
-Alcohol is not too apparent, which I appreciate.
-This is perhaps not as complex as the Ola Dubh 40 we had right before, but it is as flavorful and elegant.

Bottle. Cocoa malt and light smoke aroma. Dark brown with small head. Sweet smoky chocolate malt flavor with a lightly bitter herbal hops finish. Not bad but expected more flavor from a Baltic porter.
