Draught @ Mikkeller & Friends, Copenhagen. Pours a black colour with a small head. Aroma of smoked wood, grass and malts. Flavour of smoked malts, tart-ish wooden notes, mild bitterness and cream. Medium bodied and a bone dry mouthfeel. Dry, malty, toasted finish. Good.

75 cl bottle @ home. Pours black with an off-white head that leaves some lacing. Aroma and flavour are salt, smoke, liquorice, and roasted malt - with a slightly bitter finish.

750mL bottle (2015). Gotta admit, I must be attracted to shiny things as that silver wax looks pretty dope. Pours a deep, brownish-black (looks like a stout), espresso brownish head with very nice retention and lacing. Nose is a heavy hit of smokiness, roasted almonds, cocoa, more smoke. Mouth is medium bodied, silky, medium sweetness with a big fucking wallop of smoke over a base of raisins, chocolate, dark roasted coffee, hints of licorice, finishes with a bit of brine. Iím not a huge fan of smoked beers -- and just an FYI the claim on the bottle that this is subtle is total bullshit... this is as smoky as a BBQ pit, and I already had been told beforehand -- however this one was better than some others Iíve had. Surly is easily one of my favorite breweries.

Muddy dark brown. Lightly smokey nose with some chocolatey/fudgey overtones. Soft body. Fudgey on the palate, with a slight smoke finish.

On tap at Boulder Strong Ale Fest poured an opaque dark brown with a lasting brown head. Aromas of smoked meat, carmel and cocoa. Palate was mediuym bodied and smooth. Flavors of smoked beef, cocoa and light vanilla with a smooth lingering smokey finish.

2009 Boulder Strong Ale Festival: Sweet and smoky nose. Big ham flavor. Perhaps some bacon, too. Soft and creamy mouthfeel, with a low carbonation level. Caramel and chocolaty malts. Light smoke and campfire in the finish.

Thanks once more to KenW (via another ratebeerian to whom my hat is also removed). This Surly pours like cola; smells like barbeque. This densely textured dark lager has well-integrated smoke, but it bites in the finish. Loses carbonation fast, a bit one dimensional and messy.

22oz bottle pours a watery, opaque black with a thin, off white head. Nose of light smoke, dopplebock fruitiness, toasted bread, malts. Flavor is sweet, malty, smokey, bacon, light coffee, brown sugar, burnt molasses. Medium bodied, smokey finish.

In short: A very sweet, moderately smoky and a bit woody Baltic Porter. Fun beer.
How: Bottle 750ml. Consumed about 6 months after it was put into bottle. Sent to me by oakbluff. Thanks a lot Scott
The look: Black body topped by a short-lived beige head
In long: Nose is moderately smoky with notes of wood coal and some molasses. Taste is dark cake malts, molasses, black liquorice, vanilla extract, beach wood, some smoke, coffee filter, figs, kiwis (really!), too much residual sugars. A strong burnt brown sugar flavor from start to finish. A fun beer but after a full bottle the residual sugars were getting a bit too much for me. I was expecting more from this beer. I donít know if this beer was a one-shot beer or a new regular beer. I donít know what the state of affairs is. Probably Nevada because people have a lot of affairs in Las Vegas.
