750ml from arminjewell - thanks, man! As usual, amazing artwork and bottle presentation from Surly. Dark brown pour, with moderate carbonation at first but then nada. Nose is fairly understated, soft malts, sweet candy, and moderate smoke. Waxy palate for a lager, but oh wait it’s a Baltic porter? Taste reveals a hint of vanilla, but unfortunately we kept waiting for a smoke quality that was only ever very mild. Thinnish too.

Draft. Had no idea this was close to 10%. Seemed a little flat flavor wise and a little sweet, just a bit round too. Will certainly be trying to give this one another try.

Bottle pours dark brown with frothy tan head. Aroma smoky. Taste roast, malts, caramel, a bit of chocolate and a lot of smoke and barbecue. Palate medium-thick with moderate carbonation. Finish brief and roasty with a little alcohol burn. The porter aspects were not as strong other Baltics, and the smoky aspects dominated a bit much. Glad I got to try it.

Side by side with a homebrew clone. Not cloned and not as good as the homebrew. This is a six monthish old bottle and has medium smoke and roast aromas. This black pour. some smoke and oxidative(slightly) notes take away from the overall experience. This is caramelly and smooth and clean but a little bleh. Ok.

Black with a small off-white head. Aroma of licorice and prunes with a mild campfire smoke note. Very sweet malty flavour with a fruity touch, hard roast notes and a bit of ash in the finish

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a tasting cup. A: Pours a very dark brown, almost black, with a bubbly wood chip colored head that subsides into some nice sticky lace down the glass. S: I’m picking up some smokey meat rinds and oak. There is roasted malts and a slight coffee. T: The taste is a lot like the nose, but a lot more smokey. Smells of the embers of a campfire, very woody. Just toasted malts and smoke. M: Medium bodied with a decent carbonation. Went down pretty smooth and left a light campfire in my mouth. O: This was a very interesting brew. I wish there were some other flavors that could popped up, but the smokiness really took over and dominated. I guess that’s why they call it Smoke. Very smokey and not much else honestly but still good. Sweet with a nice creamy texture. Kinda fruity and raisiny. Decent but I kinda wish it wasn’t so strong as it does not have flavor to match.
