UPDATED: DEC 29, 2009 on tap at maproom. pours dark brown with creamy tan head that didn’t quite last till i finished. aroma of dry bakers chocolate, dark fruits, and smoked notes. as it warmed the nose developed a nice dark chocolate and more complex smokey wood character. flavor of dark fruits, chocolate, peaty smoked character to it that also developed nicely as it warmed. i couldnt feel the alcohol at all. this drank really easy. i agree with the listing as this isn’t that smokey. i’d love to try this unsmoked though.3.9. 12/29/09, draft at maproom, 09 vintage, pours blk no head, nose of beachwood smoked with mild dark fruit and chocolate. Flavors are sweet raisins, chocolate, roast with smokey undertones. Heavy slick mouthfeel. Damn this would be killer if it wad thinner and less sweet. 3.5

Big thanks to Kevin for sharing this one! A-pours a dark black liquid with a little tan colored head that is tight and creamy. S-the nose brings a ton of smokiness up front, lots of roasted and smokey malty goodness. notes of chocolate and anise. sweetness and hops in the back, plums, grassy hops. T-the taste is even smokier. lots of smoke dark malts, chocolate, anise behind. plums and raisins in the back with a light grassy hop presence. M-the feel is so smooth and creamy on the palate. the carb is light but enough to hold the body throughout. hint of crispness at the finish with just a touch of dry in the back. D-definitely a good bit of smoke with a good malty sweetness and nice hop presence in the finish. solid drink here with some nice maltiness going on.

Sample from bottle. Dark brown pour, thin head. Smoke dominates this beer, campfire, burnt wood, bacon, background flavors of roasted malt, and dried fruit. An enjoyable smokey beer.

22 oz. bottle shared with nebeergal on 19 Aug 2012. Got this bottle in a trade. Used a lager glass. Color was black with small brown head that faded quickly. Not much lace or retention. Nose is smoked ham and campfire. Taste is predominantly oak and smoke. With nice rounded semi-sweet malts of molasses, roasted malt and figs. Average carbonation with a light oily to sticky mouthfeel. The lager yeast helps the body not be so big, sticky and sweet. Overall; I never drink this style of beer, it just really isn’t my thing. However, this was drinkable and didn’t overwhelm me (too much). I was objective as much I possibly could be for a style I don’t like.

This one is a smoke bomb. Nice sweetness, but for my taste way too much smoke and really thick. Tastes like a campfire. Good in a small portion.

UPDATED: SEP 16, 2014 ABV: 8.2%. StFun supplied from his cellar giveaway. Many thanks! Tried on my pre-birthday bash (..."a very merry unbirthday... to me? TO YOU!"). To snifter it pours a dark purplish brown with virtually zero head at all, just bubbles and a thin line of foam is the only thing which seems to stop someone from asking if this is indeed a beer. Has some decent lace, however. Aromas of fudge, caramelized raisins, brown sugar, peanut brittle, and a faint yet unmistakeable ash characteristic. Can’t smell too much oak, however. Tastes bittersweet and earthy with notes of grape skins, liquid coffee, black olives, American yeast, smoke and stale Pepsi. Licorice, hops, and soil by swallow. Very thin but slushes around nicely in your mouth. Interesting. Not the best I’ve had from Surly. I had such high hopes.
