COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Surly Three is our third anniversary beer. Try it first at Winterfest! (Feb 6, 09). Look for it draft only the week of Feb 9, 2009. Brewed with 50% Honey and 50% German Dark Munich malt, fermented with a Belgian yeast strain and aged on toasted White Ash. Lots of honey aroma intertwined with rich caramel-cracker flavors, the White Ash adds a cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla aroma and a dry finish. Smells like bourbon to me.

Draft at Bavarian Lodge, Lisle. I wasnít feeling well this day, but just the smell of this nectar made me feel better right away. Belgian-type smell of dark, but not bitter malts, and golden honey. Solid black color, with a slowly dwindling, creamy tan head. Taste is just amazing: the honey sweetness of a mead with chewy malt mouthfeel of a schartzbier of Belgian black wit. Yes, some vanilla, a bit of cinnamon, wood and then way in the back is some tart orange. And that lovely honey. Yes, Iím probably over-rating this, but this just exactly was what I needed when Iím feeling poorly. The country needs more braggots! And this site needs to give it its own category!

Tap - good size tan colored thick head, very dark Amber color, definite big sweet honey aroma and favor but balanced really well with dark malty flavors, sweet finish, I don't know much about braggots and mead, but this is awfully tasty - making a great "dessert" drink ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2016 version. On tap at the brewery. Pours hazy brown with light brown head. Nose and taste is grain and honey with a little roast. Not my favorite.

Tap at Surly. Pours black with a ring of head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is a ton of apple. To the point where itís kind of ruined. I donít get much else honestly.

On Draught
Pours a real dark brown with a small head and some lace.

Aroma is floral & lightly sweet with some berry & light roast.

The flavor is woody & fairly boozy... sweet but balanced, sort of roasty with some rich honey, cherry, & mild bitterness. Perfectly complex & rich... Way neat

Tap at the source. Pours dark brown, white creamy head. Aroma is dark cherry, slightly sour funk, honey. Flavor is dark fruit, raisins, plum, sweet, but still really nice body.

On draft at the Surly Beer Hall. Dark amber pour with an off-white head and some lacing. Carmel / toffee / lightly roasted malt on the nose. Slightly floral as well. Surprising amount of honey in the taste. Clean ferment, slightly spiced. Finishes a little sweet. Goes really well with their hot link!

4 oz. pour, on tap at Surly Beer Hall in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Consumed on 4-6-15. Re-brewed version at 10.5% ABV, supposedly stronger and drier than the original version. I had the original version at Winterfest when it was released originally but never rated it. Dark brown, nearly maroon. Small amount of long-lasting, beige head. Looks a bit like thin coffee. Sweet, honey, plum, raspberry aroma. Malty, fruity, sugary smell. Barley-wine-like smell. Scents of Pedro Ximenez sherry and underbaked muffin. Sweet, chocolate, molasses, honeycomb flavor. Caramel roll. Roasted malts. Cocoa, especially in the finish. Really nice taste. Pretty darn delicious. Full body. Oily yet fizzy in the palate. Good carbonation. Nearly a 5 for palate. Better than I remember (and it was my favorite from Winterfest that year, if I recall correctly), but that shouldnít be surprising because this is tweaked and Surly has gotten better as a brewery, especially in the last two years or so. Reminds me of Barley Johnís Rosieís as a sweet, strong, dark beer that should be too sweet but is so well made that it isnít. Very well executed.

On tap at Red Cow 50th, pours a dark murky brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of caramel and toffee, dark fruits, and honey. Sweet taste similar to aroma, light tootsie roll, lots of honey flavors, mild earthy finish. All around sweetness is a nice balance of dark malts and honey.

Keg @ ABR. Deep reddish pour with a small head. Nose of vanilla, tart fruits. Mellow bugs. Some sour cream. Flavor is similar. Red apple and toast. Pretty oily. raspverry mash and white bread. Barrel and butterscotch. Medium body, soft carb.

Pour on tap at Northern Lights Rare Beer Fest, big time want of mine! Slightly hazy orange brown pour with white head, aroma brought notes of big honey, caramel, and toffee notes, some slight golden and dark fruit notes, touch of brown sugar. Taste was a mix of honey, vanilla, brown sugary notes into some fruity notes with a touch of fig, slight yeast, finishing sweet. Pretty tasty.
