4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Draft at Bavarian Lodge, Lisle. I wasn’t feeling well this day, but just the smell of this nectar made me feel better right away. Belgian-type smell of dark, but not bitter malts, and golden honey. Solid black color, with a slowly dwindling, creamy tan head. Taste is just amazing: the honey sweetness of a mead with chewy malt mouthfeel of a schartzbier of Belgian black wit. Yes, some vanilla, a bit of cinnamon, wood and then way in the back is some tart orange. And that lovely honey. Yes, I’m probably over-rating this, but this just exactly was what I needed when I’m feeling poorly. The country needs more braggots! And this site needs to give it its own category!

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On draft at the Surly Beer Hall. Dark amber pour with an off-white head and some lacing. Carmel / toffee / lightly roasted malt on the nose. Slightly floral as well. Surprising amount of honey in the taste. Clean ferment, slightly spiced. Finishes a little sweet. Goes really well with their hot link!

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
4 oz. pour, on tap at Surly Beer Hall in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Consumed on 4-6-15. Re-brewed version at 10.5% ABV, supposedly stronger and drier than the original version. I had the original version at Winterfest when it was released originally but never rated it. Dark brown, nearly maroon. Small amount of long-lasting, beige head. Looks a bit like thin coffee. Sweet, honey, plum, raspberry aroma. Malty, fruity, sugary smell. Barley-wine-like smell. Scents of Pedro Ximenez sherry and underbaked muffin. Sweet, chocolate, molasses, honeycomb flavor. Caramel roll. Roasted malts. Cocoa, especially in the finish. Really nice taste. Pretty darn delicious. Full body. Oily yet fizzy in the palate. Good carbonation. Nearly a 5 for palate. Better than I remember (and it was my favorite from Winterfest that year, if I recall correctly), but that shouldn’t be surprising because this is tweaked and Surly has gotten better as a brewery, especially in the last two years or so. Reminds me of Barley John’s Rosie’s as a sweet, strong, dark beer that should be too sweet but is so well made that it isn’t. Very well executed.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at Red Cow 50th, pours a dark murky brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of caramel and toffee, dark fruits, and honey. Sweet taste similar to aroma, light tootsie roll, lots of honey flavors, mild earthy finish. All around sweetness is a nice balance of dark malts and honey.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pour on tap at Northern Lights Rare Beer Fest, big time want of mine! Slightly hazy orange brown pour with white head, aroma brought notes of big honey, caramel, and toffee notes, some slight golden and dark fruit notes, touch of brown sugar. Taste was a mix of honey, vanilla, brown sugary notes into some fruity notes with a touch of fig, slight yeast, finishing sweet. Pretty tasty.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
I got some of bsuedekum’s pour at GTMW 2013. First thing I tried as I got through the gate, still holding my folding chairs. Pours a murky, lighter golden-brown color with some small bubbles around the inner edge. Lots of honey in this, with mixed fruits (dates, gold raisins), vanilla, toasted brown sugar, and oak. Medium-bodied, with a smooth, sweet, chewy mouthfeel and modest carbonation. Happy I got to try this tasty treat.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at 2013 GTMW, pours an unclear brown with no carbonation really present and hardly a head at all, the aroma was really sweet with the honey and dark malts, the flavor was much of the same with a huge kick of sweetness with some caramel and sweetness in the finish, interesting but nothing out of this world.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at ABR. Best honey beer I think I have ever had. The sweetness is clean with fruit and spice notes and a beautiful crisp finish. I wish I had a basement full of this stuff.
