COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We are pleased to share our innovative black Pilsner, Pils-Noir. Made from Pearl (Winter) barley, malted for us by Munton’s, CaraMalt and Crystal malts, prepared using our unique, husk-free milling process. We then naturally darken the beer using the classic Czech technique of decoction mashing. Hopped with Oregon Willamette, Mt. Hood and Washington hops, and finished with noble Czech Saaz for a fine aroma.

12 oz. bottle. It pours a dark brown color with ruby highlights and a khaki head. The aroma is malty with some black cherry, hints of sweet cocoa and root beer. The flavor is dark toasted bread, spicy hops and more hints of caramel and black cherry. Nice dry finish. This seems like a pretty good example of a Schwarzbier to me. Another good beer from these guys.

Bottle. Interesting chocolate color, with a tan head. There’s almost a little bit of chocolate in the aroma, too. Despite the preamble, this drinks with a tight character, indeed a bit pilsner-y. There is a lurking schwarz-like thing in the the initial whiff and then again in the background, but its a light quaffable thing in the end. Interesting. (#5766, 10/2/2014)

Bottle to shaker glass. Pours red brown, one finger head, good retention but no lacing. Aroma of chocolate and light licorice. Tastes very sweet. Highly carbonated, thin body, watery mouth feel. Finishes sweet with sour off notes. Not very good.

Bottle poured a clear reddish brown with a small lasting tan head. Aromas of roasted malt, earthiness and light licorice. Palate was medium bodied and crisp with a smooth finish. Flavors of roasted malt and cocoa with a smooth lingering cocoa finish.

Twelve ounce bottle, drank from a pint glass. Pours a dark, chocolatey color. The head is lacey with a carmel color. Aromas of chocolate and malts. I wish this beer tasted as good as it smells and looks! Looks super delicious but tastes like a pilsner ultra light... Malt-water...

Bottle. Dark cola pour with a big mocha head. Sweet bread, floral, caramel, cookie. Light body with light carbonation. Easy to drink. Not exciting but not offensive. Nice beer

Pours a dark chestnut brown with aroma of roasted malt and caramel. Caramel, roasted malt flavor with touch of grain and hint of bitterness.

Bottle. Pours dark but somewhat transparent in the glass, not enough for me to call it black. Flat, with little carbonation. This beer doesn’t really taste much at all like a Pilsner to me. It tasted pretty generic, and if I hadn’t been able to see it, I might even guess it to be an amber ale. Quite sweet. Little to no roast in the aroma. Very malty, however, with a slight sourness to the malt. Weak hop presence. When I think Pilsner, I think light body, crisp hoppy bitterness, and a strong grassy malt. I get none of this. RateBeer classifies this as a "Schwarzbier" but I don’t really get that either...there’s not any roast evident in the aroma. I found this an unremarkable beer and would not drink it again. The sweetness and sourness were what really killed it for me...both were too much and made it a little unpleasant to drink, although I did finish it rather than pouring it out. I’d prefer a number of cheaper beers.

Draft at local Damon’s. Pours licorice with a thin khaki head. Doesn’t leave much lacing. A bit of licorice malt on he nose. A bit thin on the tongue with some caramel malt forward on the tongue. Finishes with a touch of bitterness. Solid but not my favorite style.

Dark brown body, thin off-white head, sparse lacing. Roasted malt and caramel. Light grassy hops. Medium bodied, smooth carbonation, light sweetness.
