COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We are pleased to share our innovative black Pilsner, Pils-Noir. Made from Pearl (Winter) barley, malted for us by Munton’s, CaraMalt and Crystal malts, prepared using our unique, husk-free milling process. We then naturally darken the beer using the classic Czech technique of decoction mashing. Hopped with Oregon Willamette, Mt. Hood and Washington hops, and finished with noble Czech Saaz for a fine aroma.

Stunned as soon as I began to pour because of how dark it is for a pils. Slight toasted malt scent with thin head. Full flavor that is exceptional for a pilsener. Enjoyed!

Was hoping for more. Crystal malt smell and taste. Finish is flat. Lacks the nice saaz finish or dryness in general. Instead it is sweet. It also lacks carbonation for me. It doesn’t have to be like a sprite, but I like some nice suds in a pilsner. Just didn’t quite come together for me, especially for a pilsner. Unique try though.

Malty, but not overly sweet. Slight caramel flavor, full with a rather crisp finish. Hints of toast and a touch of hoppy bitterness.

Bottle. Pours cola brown with a small off white head that is gone before you know it. The aroma is on the malty side with some sweet caramel and nut notes. The taste is sweet caramel, some nuttiness, not very pils esque. Not bad but more of a octoberfest.

12oz bottle. Poured a deep amber, almost brown with a small sized off white head. Aromas of grains, roast, and earthy. Tastes of roast, grains, some chocolate, and earthy.

Barcade, Philadelphia tap ($6): Pous a black color with a tan head. Aroma is straw, smoke, roasted malt, and grassy hops. Taste is much the same. Nice body. Easy drinking, but nice and complex at the same time. Confused why this isn’t a schwarzbier.

On the ninth day of Christmas. Pours deeper brown with an off white head. Aroma is nut, caramel, roast and earthy. Taste is sweet with some smokey bitters. Light mouth feel and a crisp finish. Very drinkable.

Bottle. Pours a clear mahogany brown body with a small fizzy off-white head that faded to a wispy partial film. The nose is lightly hoppy with an underlying base of lightly roasted and chocolate malt. Not sure how this differs from a Schwarzbier, but I guess they can call it anything they want. The flavor is pretty smooth and clean with a nice restrained dry roastiness. Not quite as sweet as I would expect a Schwarzbier to be, so maybe that’s the difference? Pretty crisp with a nice dry finish and fine fizzy carbonation. Not too bad, first beer that I’ve had from these guys.

I'm struggling with this one because isn't this just a schwarzbier? Thin and crispy body. Aroma has light roast and smoke. Flavor is similar with the smoke lingering. Light earthy hops. Has the makings of a pils initially but the light smoke comes on after malt. Decent.
