3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
½ liter bottle. Pours quite black with caramel-coloured head; gorgeous. Sweet smell of coffee and malt. Flavour is heavy on burnt coffee with a hint of licorice and a somewhat peculiar acidic aftertaste. Good, but not great.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Danish stout in, according to the label, "English style" and flavoured with actual liquorice, so I’m expecting sweet stout here... Creamy but fairly thin and opening, pale yellowish beige head over a very dark mahogany coloured beer, not quite black, at least not on the edges. Aroma shouts (typically English) liquorice candy all the way through, next to more subtle odours of bitter chocolate, fried mushrooms, cappuccino, candied figs, soft balsamic vinegar, caramel, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, dried flowers, raisins, hints of aniseed liqueur (in a dull kind of way - probably that liquorice again), dried leaves, sourish blueberries, bayleaf, some ’natural’ iron. A refined candied sweetness opens the palate, very much like the old liquorice sticks I remember from when I was a child (and it’s always nice when a beer brings back long-forgotten memories), raisins, some dried banana, with a soft umami edge and a vague sourishness underneath; very soft carbo, oily and ’greasy’ mouthfeel but remaining very smooth and supple, with a slick caramel maltiness to it, nutty, becoming more chocolatey and coffeeish roasted bitter in the end but staying gentle; there is a very subtle amount of ’metallic’ effect as well, but feeling very natural for a stout and therefore not disturbing at all. Finish consists of persisting malt sweetness, a lot of liquorice both in taste and retronasally, and, all the way at the back, some peppery, leafy hops for balance. An almost ’medicinal’ liquorice flavour remains in the throat along with a long lasting, drying ’bittersweetness’ combining the sweet dark malts and the spicy hops. Still, it is still the liquorice which gets the last word here: even after swallowing, an ethereal, volatile but strong flavour of English liquorice candy remained for a long time. The description ’liquorice’ is often used for stouts and other dark beers and can be the result of fermentation, but in this case there is no way to get around it, this beer effectively uses (artisanal) liquorice and you’ll know it. Absolutely not recommended for those who hate this flavour, but for those who don’t, this is an enjoyable beer, and it is a clever thought putting this particular spice in what is basically a medium dry stout. Interesting and not lacking in complexity, but admittedly the liquorice is all over the place.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
The color is black with high beige head. Aroma is roasty, licorice and somekind of licorice bakery. Taste is quite sweet and has a smokey flauvour, well balanced. The beer has a long licorice testing finish. Very nice experience.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Foam is creamy and durable. The aroma is not atypical for a stout, but contains the familiar notes of licorice, coffee and roasted malt. The first mouthful is a little light, a little like a dry stout. A little burnt taste stands out and then proceeds quite quickly to the taste of licorice root are slowly growing in strength and become English liquorice in abundance. Licorice taste lasts long and only slightly hop bitterness is to track towards the end.

Spændende og lækker. En "nem" og ukompliceret øl. Ingen bitterhed og ringe karbonering. Gør sig fint til dessert.

Indeed lots of licorice aromas here. More or the classic kind, but woody and cassonade like, not so much bay leave. Some sweetness but not very caramelised, giving a dry feel. Surely enough bitterness, but again classic in its approach. Butterscotch ending (but not in an off flavour way), quite short. It’s okay. Ugly label, BTW. (33cl bottle from Saveur Bière)

Medelkropp. Skön lakritston i eftersmaken.
